About The Position

Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York. The ASL Interpreter will provide effective interpreting and transliterating services for deaf and hard of hearing people which includes any oral communication during in-person and virtual classroom instruction (labs included), scheduled instructor appointments, scheduled tutoring sessions, any student services appointments, and student services events, etc. The role requires developing partnerships within the classroom and educating community partners, agencies, and organizations regarding interpreter services. The position is part-time and requires availability to work flexible daytime and/or evening hours and occasional weekends at any VPCC campuses and all extension centers or events.

Requirements

• Relevant work-related experience.
• Demonstrated proficiency in ASL.
• Demonstrated proficiency using English grammar.
• Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III or equivalent certification.
• Must be able to pass a background check.
• Must have a valid driver's license or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
• Must be available to work during the fall, spring, and summer semesters.

Responsibilities

• Provide effective interpreting and transliterating services for deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
• Interpret during in-person and virtual classroom instruction, scheduled appointments, tutoring sessions, and student services events.
• Develop partnerships within the classroom and educate community partners about interpreter services.
• Perform other duties as assigned, including assisting the agency or state government in emergencies.
