About The Position

Student Accessibility Services: Student Accessibility Services (SAS) works with 4,000+ students with disabilities every year to facilitate equal access and reasonable accommodations. Of these students, approximately 7 - 10 students rely on ASL Interpreting for equal access in their academic courses and campus activities. These students collectively take a wide array of courses across all available disciplines while also participating in different campus activities. The Opportunity: Student Accessibility Services (SAS) seeks three ASL Interpreter and Access Specialists to coordinate and deliver ASL interpreting to deaf students in the classroom and on campus. These positions will also support SAS in other ways, though classroom interpreting will be at least 70% of the job responsibility. UCF is seeking to fill multiple roles. Candidates for this job posting will be considered for additional vacancies in this department.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma and 4+ years of relevant experience working with deaf/hard of hearing individuals; certification is also required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219(6).
  • Must possess an RID certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, such as the National Interpreter Certification (NIC).

  • Candidates should have reliable transportation as job sites vary and interpreting services will be provided in various buildings across UCF's Main Campus and the greater central Florida area.

Nice To Haves

  • 3+ years of experience interpreting higher education courses.
  • RID certification.
  • Understanding of Deaf culture.
  • Familiarity with ADA and Section 504.
  • Experience interpreting in higher level STEM courses (e.g., Molecular Cell Biology, Calculus with Analytic Geometry I, General Psychology, Data Analysis for Criminal Justice).
  • Familiarity with and commitment to NAD-RID Code of Conduct.
  • Independent judgment in dynamic environments.

Responsibilities

  • Provide real-time ASL interpretation and/or oral translating between spoken English and ASL in academic and campus settings.
  • Review course materials and content to prepare for interpreting assignments.
  • Interpret pre-recorded and media content, including lectures and presentations.
  • Assist with scheduling or service coordination for Deaf/hard-of-hearing students when needed.
  • Assist SAS as needed with reception, tabling events, proctoring exams, and other SAS workload responsibilities as time permits and the needs arise around the academic year and the ASL Interpreter course schedules; tasks may vary based on the skill set and interests of the individual.
