The University of South Alabama is seeking to hire an ASIM (Alabama Science in Motion) Specialist in the subject of Secondary Science. This position is integral to the Alabama State Department of Education's initiative to enhance STEM teaching across the state. The ASIM Specialist will play a crucial role in supporting high school science education by providing professional learning, educator support, and instructional materials necessary for implementing the Alabama Course of Study Standards for Science. The specialist will facilitate and participate in professional learning for teachers and administrators, addressing specific needs of local education agencies (LEAs) and offering both online and in-person training opportunities during the school year and summer months. In addition to facilitating professional learning, the ASIM Specialist will assist in the development and maintenance of common professional learning offerings and resources for AMSTI (Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative) and ALSDE (Alabama State Department of Education). This includes providing ongoing support and coaching to AMSTI lead teachers, certified facilitators, instructional coaches, and administrators. The specialist will also collaborate with institutions of higher education (IHEs) to plan and conduct pre-service and continuing education activities. The role requires active participation in AMSTI professional learning activities and staff meetings, as well as frequent communication and coordination with the AMSTI Site Director and other specialists. The ASIM Specialist will be responsible for maintaining proficiency in pedagogical content knowledge and AMSTI practices through approved professional learning opportunities. Additionally, the specialist will work closely with materials managers to ensure that lesson materials and equipment are prepared and available for classroom use, and will provide feedback on the customization of kits and materials to enhance their usability for teachers. Regular attendance and the ability to work defined schedules, including additional hours as needed, are essential for this position.
