The Asian Domain Keeper at Audubon Zoo is responsible for providing comprehensive care and wellness for a diverse collection of Asian species, including Asian elephants, Amur leopards, Malayan tigers, and more. The role emphasizes safety when working with dangerous animals and requires attention to detail. Keepers must manage complex work requirements, demonstrating time management, creative thinking, patience, and dedication. The position offers opportunities for skills development and specialization in animal care and conservation.

  • Perform routine husbandry including feeding prescribed diets and monitoring animal health.
  • Assist hospital staff with health monitoring and assessment.
  • Clean, sanitize, and prepare animal housing areas as directed.
  • Follow all Standard Operating Procedures for assigned areas.
  • Engage in continuous learning and develop professional skills in animal care and conservation.
  • Participate in welfare assessments and work with curators to improve animal wellbeing.
  • Develop knowledge of modern husbandry techniques and accreditation standards.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and provide feedback.
  • Perform approved Behavioral Enrichment activities and create new enrichment.
  • Promote a positive work environment and team morale.
  • Identify and report maintenance problems in a timely manner.
  • Perform facility and exhibit maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain high standards of personal appearance and grooming.
  • Conduct Keeper Chats, VIP/BTS Tours, and Wild Encounters as required.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum high school diploma.
  • Current driver's license.
  • Willingness to work weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Preferred college degree in biology or a related science or equivalent practical experience.
  • Previous paid experience in the care of exotic wildlife.
  • Knowledge of modern husbandry practices and animal welfare standards.
  • Knowledge of operant conditioning.
  • Experience operating heavy machinery such as skid steers and forklifts.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Fun attitude and emotional intelligence.
  • Experience with hand tools, power tools, and lawn equipment.
  • Experience with capture and restraint of exotic wildlife.
  • Previous firearms experience.
