About The Position

The Iowa Clinic has an exciting opportunity to be a part of a team at our new ambulatory surgery center. Conveniently located near I-80 in Waukee, this state-of-the-art, 21,000 sq. ft. ASC offers same-day joint replacement, orthopedic, sports medicine, foot and ankle, plastics, pain management surgery and a cardiac catheterization lab in an out-patient setting. We are looking for experienced professionals who enjoy being a part of a close-knit team and who align with our ACT values – Accountability, Compassion and Teamwork. This is a PRN position - We are looking to fill it with an ASC Surgical Technologist OR Operating Room RN. Surg Tech: You will work in the Ambulatory Surgery Center, and your primarily responsibilities will be to ensuring proper care and use of surgical instruments and assisting surgeons during procedures. RN: Responsible for performing duties related to direct patient care. The Operating Room RN will assess, monitor, and provide professional nursing services for patients of assigned physician(s) following established nursing practice standards. The role will be responsible for providing professional nursing support in the ambulatory surgery center by assisting physicians with procedures, patient assessment, transfers, and patient education.

Requirements

  • Surgical Technologist Certification.
  • Mandatory reporter Training certification
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Graduate from an approved surgical technology program
  • Minimum of 2 years’ operating room experience preferred.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Current RN license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa.
  • Certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Mandatory Reporter Certification, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support required.
  • Two years nursing experience in an acute care hospital setting required, specialty-specific.
  • Ambulatory surgery experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates activities with the RN’s and other co-workers in planning and implementing care in the OR.
  • Assists the circulating nurse with patient care activities like positioning, prep, and transport.
  • Responsible for maintaining the integrity, safety, and efficiency of the sterile field.
  • Uses aseptic technique to arrange instruments and supplies and assist the surgeon throughout the surgery by providing sterility of instrumentation.
  • Performs instrument and sponge counts.
  • Demonstrates correct technique in instruments, suture, specimen, in addition to medication handling and labeling.
  • Disposes of hazardous waste appropriately.
  • Follows all standards of performance guidelines established by the surgery center.
  • Assumes accountability for enhancing own knowledge through professional associations, journals, workshops, in-services, etc., to proactively keep updated on sterile processing techniques.
  • Maintains awareness of applicable laws and/or regulations and remains current on changes.
  • Recognizes implications of applicable laws and/or regulations to the department and implements or recommends courses of action to ensure compliance.
  • Utilizes the nursing process and effective written and verbal communications skills in the provision of safe, effective, high quality nursing services to patient populations.
  • Assists physician in performance of procedures through implementation of the perioperative process.
  • Assumes responsibility for intra-operative patient safety by acting as the nursing advocate for the patient by; appropriate positioning, confirming the procedure and site, actively participating in the time out, informs surgeon, anesthesiologist and operating room team of any issues or concerns.
  • Monitors sterile and aseptic techniques in all areas of the perioperative process.
  • Performs all circulating duties with efficiency and speed.
  • Performs scrub duties, as necessary.
  • Assists in the: set up and clean-up of the operating room, opening of sterile packs, instruments, and supplies.
