As an As Needed Archaeological Field Technician, you’ll be part of a trusted Cultural Resources team supporting public and private clients throughout the region. Day in the Life of an As Needed Archaeological Field Technician As an As Needed Archaeological Field Technician, your days may include archaeological construction monitoring, field surveys, excavations, and artifact documentation. You’ll work outdoors—sometimes in high-heat conditions—coordinate with construction crews and tribal monitors and communicate closely with HELIX project teams. No two projects are the same, making this As Needed Archaeological Field Technician role ideal for adaptable, motivated archaeologists.

Requirements

  • Coursework or degree progress in anthropology, archaeology, history, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Field experience in archaeological survey, monitoring, or excavation
  • Knowledge of Southern California archaeology and cultural history
  • Valid California Driver’s License with a clean driving record
  • Ability to work full days outdoors in remote or high-heat conditions

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in anthropology, archaeology, history, or related field
  • Professional cultural management experience in Southern California
  • Construction monitoring and DPR documentation experience
  • Experience with artifact cataloguing and analysis
  • HAZWOPER and/or railway/roadway safety certification
  • City of San Diego–qualified monitor
  • Willingness to work night shifts when needed (projects starting at 5pm or later)

Responsibilities

  • Archaeological construction monitoring
  • Field surveys, excavation (testing and data recovery), and documentation
  • Artifact cleaning, sorting, identification, and cataloging
  • Records searches and background research
  • Assisting with report writing and DPR 523 form preparation
  • Clear communication with HELIX staff and field partners
