About The Position

POSITION PURPOSE: The purpose of this internship with Jefferson County Public Schools is to provide students with the opportunity to earn academic credit toward graduation. This is an unpaid internship. Interns will assist with maintenance activities in parks, open space, and athletic fields, as well as within the Utilities and Streets.

Requirements

  • This internship is limited to students between the age of sixteen(16) and eighteen (18) years of age with a valid driver's license and currently participating in the Arvada West High School Internship Program.
  • Basic knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment, and standard practices of park maintenance
  • basic knowledge of mechanical operation of mowers, and park-related vehicular equipment
  • knowledge of basic hand and power tools, rakes and leaf blowers, including chippers, tree spades, chain saws, push mowers, and weed eaters
  • drag, line, paint and set up baseball/softball/soccer/football/lacrosse fields at athletic complexes and parks as needed for all user groups including baseball programs, girls' softball program, football, lacrosse, soccer and any related tournament rentals
  • ability to maintain and make minor repairs to irrigation systems

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to lift more than 50 pounds on a frequent basis, sit, stand, walk, kneel, squat, stoop, bend, reach, turn, climb, crawl, repeatedly twist the upper body, talk, hear, see, grasp, demonstrate manual dexterity and perform repetitive body movement.
  • The employee must demonstrate the ability to remain calm during routine and stressful conditions.
  • The employee is also required to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Parks Maintenance: Trims and fertilizes trees and shrubs; utilizes working tools and maintenance equipment, such as riding mowers, tractors, single-axle trucks, chippers, tree spades, chain saws, push mowers, and weed eaters; plants trees, shrubs, and flowers in outdoor locations; cleans up debris and trash from open space areas; manually waters flower beds, trees, and grassy areas; paints playground equipment, trash cans, picnic tables, and pavilions; repairs playground apparatus; repairs and maintains irrigation equipment; cleans mechanical equipment; may use City vehicle to pick up parts and other required supplies.
  • Athletic Fields: Provides program set-up and tear-down as scheduled. Ensures all facilities and playing surfaces are in safe and operable condition. Preparation of athletic fields to include: baseball, softball, soccer, football and lacrosse. Ability to operate field equipment. Prepares fields for games including dragging infield, chalking according to specified dimensions, watering infield, and setting bases. Performs other field maintenance duties including: filling infield holes and adding clay to infield when necessary. Performs regular inspections and repairs of athletic facilities and amenities to include baseball field fencing and backstops, player benches, spectator bleachers, dugouts and dugout covers, backstop boards, play structures, and play areas. Accurately lays out soccer, football, rugby, and lacrosse fields using requested field dimensions. Paints athletic fields and sets out goals for games. Maintains safety and playability of athletic fields. Performs all maintenance tasks on athletic fields and sports turf areas including raking fields, sweeping, irrigation, blowing and picking up clippings, paper, trash and other debris from athletic fields and surrounding grounds. Utilizes independent judgment in performing grounds maintenance activities and makes recommendations to the supervisor/ leadworker for improvements. Operates, inspects and maintains equipment for safe and proper operation including but not limited to push mowers, light duty vehicles, blowers, trimmers and edgers.
  • Utilities: Learn to maintain water system infrastructure including but not limited to such programs as main failure repairs, valve repairs, valve rotation, valve box repairs, service line maintenance, fire hydrant maintenance and repair, water main flushing, utility locations, leak detection, cathodic protection, air-vacuum valve maintenance, water meter and transponder installation and repair, meter pit repairs, vault repairs, pump station repair, water main tapping, investigation of low pressure and low volume concerns, controlled system flushing, system mapping research, SCADA system alarm diagnosis, water system storage tank and flow adjustments, large meter maintenance, water meter profiling, aid to contractors, irrigation ditch maintenance, all excavation repairs and maintenance of the water system.
  • Streets: Works alongside Streets staff to observe and learn to perform routine technical work in the maintenance, repair, and installation of street infrastructure, drainage systems, right-of-ways, traffic signs, and pavement markings within the City.
