About The Position

Under the close supervision of the Arts and Enrichment Coordinator, this position teaches art and enrichment classes for all ages in both group and individual settings. Also teaches specialized arts, enrichment classes, birthday parties and special events offsite. This position will primarily teach line dance classes and possibly other classes based on individual expertise. Instructors will teach classes at multiple South Suburban locations and be able to reliably commute to those locations for class. Classes will normally be held on weekdays with potential to expand to evenings and weekends.

Requirements

  • Arts & Enrichment Instructor I
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have at least one (1) year of teaching experience in line dance.
  • Arts & Enrichment Instructor II
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years old with a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have at least two (2) years of professional teaching experience in line dance.
  • Current certifications in AED/CPR and First Aid preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within thirty (30) days of employment. Must be insurable by the District carrier at the onset and for the duration of employment.
  • Knowledge of teaching and learning techniques and methodologies.
  • Must be knowledgeable of positive interaction techniques with children, students and their parents, adult and senior students, and staff. Demonstrates use of these techniques in all interactions.
  • Must be able to work with students in a constructive and caring manner while creating unique and fun experiences and teaching safety in the classroom.
  • Requires the ability to communicate verbally with both children and adults.
  • Must be flexible and able to handle multiple tasks and conflicting priorities.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to demonstrate and perform the techniques unique to varying art disciplines.
  • Must be able to push, pull or balance.
  • Upper body strength is a requisite to lift/move a maximum of 25 pounds unassisted, and lift/move a maximum of 75 pounds with assistance.
  • Vision requirements include: near acuity, far acuity, and depth perception and color vision.
  • Must be able to frequently sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, reach and lift, exhibit manual dexterity and the ability to handle objects.
  • The ability to talk and hear via the telephone, email, and through face-to-face communication is needed.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for planning and the instruction of art and enrichment classes for participants with varying levels of skill and ability. Must participate in each class and with every level; adapting instruction techniques to meet the needs of participants.
  • Maintains course records and rosters.
  • Communicate with co-workers, patrons and coordinators effectively and efficiently.
  • Present relevant content to students by showing examples of selected dances, provide students with demonstrations and ways to practice line dance.
  • Help promote arts and enrichment programming.
  • Ensure that appropriate equipment/supplies are available for classes and events; set up and take down. Perform required cleaning.
  • Inspects and reports tool/equipment condition on a regular basis to ensure safe use.
  • Monitor supply inventory and ensure responsible use of supplies to prevent waste.
  • Be prepared, creative and energized when teaching.
  • Provide a safe learning environment and manage the classroom effectively; keep students in line of vision at all times/never turn back on class.
  • Enforce safety and program rules, policies, and regulations.
  • Recognize emergency and dangerous situations by reacting quickly and calmly; administer first aid as needed. Completes Accident/Incident report.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Correct or inform supervisor of any facility hazards; communicate issues/complaints to supervisor as needed.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, trainings, and orientations.
  • Travel offsite to regular classes and special events to instruct and lead art and enrichment classes.
  • Attend work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis; subs for co-workers when available; is responsible for securing substitutes for all scheduled and published shifts if unable to work.
