About The Position

Goddard Riverside is a well-established Manhattan community-based agency with an annual operating budget of approximately $ 50 million. Goddard Riverside is one of New York City’s leading human service organizations meeting the basic needs of children, youth and families, homeless people, and older adults across Manhattan and New York City. The primary function of the Activity Specialist is to plan group activities that provide a safe and engaging learning environment to the participants of the Stanley M. Isaacs Beacon program The program is delivered through a comprehensive menu of services, including project-based learning that integrate education enrichment, visual arts, clubs, trips, and sports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • 2+ years teaching experience with middle or elementary school children, after-school setting preferred.
  • Knowledge and understanding of youth development, after school and public education.
  • Must have passion for the mission and demonstrate interest in the field of education and youth development.
  • Must have a sense of humor, positive demeanor and a passion for youth development.
  • Must be able to pass background check including a Fingerprint Screen, Sex Offender Registry and be physically able to work with children (via a doctor’s signed consent including TB screening).
  • CPR/First Aid Certification a plus
  • Demonstrate professionalism & leadership to be a team member of a group of staff and a group of 15-25 youth in grades K-8.
  • Experience in providing individualized and group instruction to meet the needs of youth with various levels of skills.
  • Knowledge of places and events to take the children on trips to engage their interest in Art.
  • Know and enforce ALL emergency procedures and follow safety guidelines associated with all program areas. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your children's safety and whereabouts at all times.
  • Attending staff training, and weekly meetings.
  • Other duties as required and assigned by Program Director and Assistant Director of Beacon.
  • Must be able to follow curriculum.
  • Must be responsible, reliable and punctual!
  • Create and able to implement plans for group participation.
  • Effectively supervise children.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, walking
  • Must be able to carry 50lbs or more

Responsibilities

  • Take daily attendance.
  • Design and implement holistic, engaging and quality school Arts and Craft curriculum in specific content areas that explore student interests, expand their knowledge and teach basic skills to both students and staff in grades K-8.
  • Structure classroom instruction to promote student-centered, project-based learning for Art and Craft projects.
  • Plan, organize and prepare activities and materials for daily schedule and lead children in classroom activities.
  • Experience working in a recreational/after school setting.
  • Candidates must be enthusiastic and dedicated to the program’s enrichment/youth development goals.
  • Develop lesson plans of age-appropriate Arts and Craft activities and themes that will support the development of social-emotional learning competencies.
  • Supervise youth and participate in all activities by building positive relationships with youth and peers, serving as a role model with respect to demeanor, communication, behavior and the organization’s mission, philosophy, and goals.
  • Enforce program rules, identify & respond to participant behavior issues, and carry out corrective action when needed by identifying and seeking to resolve conflicts and behavioral problems.
  • Communicate with parents about participant’s experiences and report concerns to Program Director.
  • Know and enforce ALL emergency procedures and follow all safety guidelines associated with all program areas. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your children’s safety and their whereabouts at all times.
  • Inform the supervisor of any noteworthy incidents occurring during program time.
  • Build positive relationships with youth and adults and serve as a role model with respect to demeanor, communication and overall attitude.
  • Attend staff training, weekly meetings, case conferences, and supervision meetings.
  • Other duties as required and assigned by Program Director, ADED and/or DED.
