About The Position

The Art Teacher at Durham Charter School is responsible for providing high-quality art education to students in grades K-9. This role emphasizes teaching fundamental art skills, fostering aesthetic appreciation, and integrating art with core educational subjects. The teacher will engage students in various artistic techniques and promote a positive learning environment while collaborating with faculty and the community.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in elementary education or related field.
  • North Carolina teaching certification.
  • 11+ years of classroom experience in education, preferably in art or fine arts.

Responsibilities

  • Teach fundamental skills in art, ensuring students meet the North Carolina Essential Standards for the appropriate grade.
  • Instruct students in proper selection, care and use of tools, materials, props, and equipment.
  • Provide instruction that allows students to develop aesthetic concepts and appreciate different themes, styles and forms of artistic expression.
  • Introduce students to the Masters, exposing them to the variety of techniques used.
  • Demonstrate techniques in drawing and painting.
  • Provide individual and small-group instruction that adapts the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual and artistic abilities.
  • Integrate online and computer technology into the curriculum to promote student learning.
  • Work with fellow faculty members to reinforce core classroom education during art classes.
  • Introduce students to various interdisciplinary connections and life applications of the visual arts.
  • Provide opportunities for students to see the work of local artists and invite them to share their work and demonstrate techniques.
  • Co-plan and present displays designed to exhibit students' work for the school and community, including at least one school-wide art show per year.
  • Participate in individual learning plans and monitor student performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic appreciation.
  • Maintain ongoing communications with parents/guardians and school counselors on individual student progress.
  • Maintain the classroom to promote positive student behavior and a consistent learning environment.
  • Maintain discipline in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems of Healthy Start Academy.
  • Protect the safety of students and student confidential information as required by Healthy Start Academy.
  • Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs, such as after school art club.
  • Select and requisition instructional materials, tools, instructional aids, and maintain required inventory records.
  • Organize storage areas and control use of materials, equipment and tools to prevent loss or abuse.
  • Prepare lesson plans for substitute teachers in the event of an anticipated work absence.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by Administration.
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities and self-selected professional growth activities.
