About The Position

BAE Systems, one of the world's leading defense contractors and a stable Fortune 500 company, is hiring a Tracked Vehicle Mechanic with fabrication & paint experience to work as prototype assembler on our combat vehicles. The Prototype Assembler responsibilities include: Repairing & operating military track vehicles. Operation of basic fabrication & milling machines. Experience with drill presses, band saws, and other standard machine shop equipment. Systems Assembly and Integration that includes sub-component fabrication, inspection, test, vehicle maintenance and field support tasks conducted by Sterling Heights Prototype shop personnel. Providing direct support to design engineering through the entire product development life cycle Works from and reads engineering drawings, sketches, samples and understands & executes prototyping language & verbal instructions. Performs layout of vehicle repairs in depth from blueprint reading capability and hand book or technical manual data. Uses hand tools and hand power tools. Sets up and operates equipment for: shearing, sawing, routing, punching, drilling, forming, rolling and grinding, etc. Receives assistance and guidance on only the most complicated work. Selects all tools and materials necessary and sets up and operates all prototype shop equipment necessary to complete tasks, and performs all necessary maintenance on equipment with minimal supervision. Notes and reports variances or discrepancies in drawings or work and report them to the supervisor or appropriate person(s). Operates some or all BAE's existing product line and experimental vehicles both on site and at field locations. Operates forklift, overhead cranes, jib cranes and hoists. Full attention is given to the prevention of personal injury and prevention of injury to others.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma and eight years of relevant work experience if not military trained
  • US military Tracked Vehicle Crewmember/mechanic MOS & 4-6 years work experience
  • Programming CNC or Waterjet machines with Master CAM (MUST for Interview)
  • Technical skills in the performance of assembly, integration, fabrication and testing in the evaluation, repair, and maintenance of military ground combat vehicles and other equipment. (REQUIREMENT for Interview)
  • Application of overall mechanical, some electrical trouble shooting and component fabrication knowledge to include basic fabrication machining processes.
  • Conformance of all products to specifications and processes
  • Comprehensive knowledge to manufacture, assemble, inspect and repair as appropriate.
  • MUST BE ABLE TO OBTAIN A SECRET CLEARANCE

Nice To Haves

  • Paint Booth Experience (Plus for Interview)
  • Weld experience Aluminum, Steel or Both (Plus for Interview)
  • Previous experience working on military tracked or wheeled military vehicles (Requirement for Interview unless FSR Trained).
  • Heavy diesel engine mechanics & troubleshooting experience on military tracked vehicles as a Field Service Repair Technician with machinist skills may fit narrow hiring requirements.
  • Previously held Army MOS of: 91H - Track Vehicle Repairer, or, 91P- Artillery Mechanic
  • Previously held USMC MOS of: 2146 - Main Battle Tank Repairer/Technician, 2147 - Light Armored Vehicle Repairer, 2141 - Assault Amphibious Vehicle Repairer
  • Military service in repair of generators & wheeled vehicle systems if Technical School training on the programming and operating of CNC or Waterjet will also be evaluated.
