About The Position

The Maryland Department of Veterans and Military Families (DVMF) was created by the State Legislature in 1999 as an executive agency with the mission of assisting veterans, active duty service members, their families and dependents, in securing benefits earned through military service. Under the Department of Veterans and Military Families are five major programs: Service and Benefits Program Charlotte Hall Veterans Home Cemetery and Memorial Program Communications, Outreach, & Advocacy Program’s Maryland Veterans Trust Fund DVMF is seeking an Area Supervisor for their Veterans Benefits Specialist department. The position location is subject to review based on program needs. GRADE 17 LOCATION OF POSITION The position location is subject to review based on program needs. This Area Supervisor, Veterans Benefits Specialist Supervisor, initiates and presents claims for compensation, pension, entitlements, and other benefits to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and other agencies on behalf of veterans, their eligible dependents, and their survivors. Helping veterans and their dependents receive the benefits to which they are entitled is a requirement set forth in the Annotated Code of Maryland, State Government Article Subtitle 9.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Three years of experience providing services to veterans and their dependents.

  • Experience reviewing and submitting accurate VA claims.
  • Experience providing outreach to Veterans, their dependents and families.

Responsibilities

  • Directs subordinates in assisting and representing veterans, their dependents, and their survivors applying for compensation pension, and entitlement.
  • Ensures compliance with federal regulations and procedures in representing veterans by virtue of legally executed power of attorney.
  • Maintains liaison with federal and local officials and keeps abreast of changes, enhancements, or procedures relating to veterans’ benefits.
  • Develops and implements training for subordinates.
  • Prepares and develops claims.
  • Advises clients on the regulatory requirements in submission of claims.
  • Assists clients in the preparation and prosecution of appeals of unfavorable VA decisions on benefit entitlement.
  • Manages the Western Area Veterans Service Centers.
  • Evaluates need for personnel or equipment enhancements; submits requests and justification to director for review and final approval.
  • Provides and monitors workload for trends.
  • Maintains statistics for the program and provides quality review for all claims work to be submitted to the USDVA.
  • Acts as first level supervisor for Western area service program staff and evaluates performance.
  • Deals with difficult clients and those wishing to talk to a supervisor.
  • Maintains contact with and makes presentations to veterans and civic organizations; elected officials and citizens to keep them informed of available veterans benefits and entitlement and related claims procedures.
  • Participates in public relations activities.
