About The Position

The Area Operator at Avangrid is responsible for supervising and coordinating the use of substations, transmission facilities, and selected distribution facilities at 34.5 KV and below. This role involves ensuring optimal power system efficiency, managing outages, conducting load flows, and performing voltage control. The Area Operator acts as the central authority for field work, ensuring safety and reliability in power system operations.

Requirements

• At least 6 years of experience in dispatch-related roles (substations, hydro, steam, engineering, line, etc.).
• Knowledge of power system dynamics, dispatcher tools, relay schemes, and special protection systems.
• Familiarity with the location and characteristics of substations, transmission lines, and distribution lines rated at 34.5 KV and below.
• Must have a two-year degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or related field, or have passed the CMP ETQ exam.

• Working knowledge of construction and operation of power handling equipment.

Responsibilities

• Supervise, monitor, regulate, and coordinate the use of substations and transmission facilities.
• Coordinate transmission and selected distribution outages and conduct load flows.
• Perform contingency analysis and voltage control, dispatching orders according to CMP procedures.
• Isolate power system faults and restore customer service and system reliability safely and efficiently.
• Coordinate with Line and Substation Departments to minimize customer outages and ensure power system integrity.
• Maintain reactive voltage support and minimize losses on the 34.5 KV system.
• Perform load flow studies to assess the impact of maintenance applications on the power system.
• Take advanced system operations training as needed.
• Manage and dispatch the Outage Management System for outage recording and reporting.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
