The Area Coordinator (AC) at Simmons University plays a pivotal role in fostering community and student development within the university's residence halls. Reporting to the Assistant Director for Residential Engagement, the AC is responsible for overseeing a residential area that accommodates approximately 600 students. This position involves providing leadership and supervision to a team of up to 2 Graduate Assistants and 16 Resident Advisors, ensuring that the residential environment is inclusive, supportive, and conducive to the academic and personal growth of all residents. The AC is tasked with creating a caring atmosphere that promotes a genuine sense of belonging among students and staff alike. In this role, the AC will engage directly with residents, offering guidance and support through various programming initiatives aimed at enhancing their academic, emotional, and social development. This includes coordinating the development of impactful programs in collaboration with Graduate Assistants and Resident Advisors, managing the programming budget, and tracking the effectiveness of these initiatives. Regular meetings with student staff and participation in after-hours on-call duty rotations are essential components of the job, as is serving as a hearing officer in the student conduct process. The AC will also play a significant role in the operational aspects of residence life, including the opening and closing of residence halls, conducting inspections, and ensuring compliance with health and safety standards. Collaboration with various university offices and participation in university-wide committees are also key responsibilities, as the AC represents the Residence Life department in broader discussions and initiatives.
