About the position

The Architect serves as a steward of public funds and is responsible for managing the full scope of the architectural building process from pre-design through construction completion for county buildings and facilities. This role ensures compliance, mitigates risk, and provides technical assistance for related building construction projects.

Responsibilities

  • Manage architectural project budgets and review cost estimates.
  • Identify and mitigate risks associated with building projects.
  • Oversee and coordinate Architectural/Engineering teams, General Contractors, and other vendors.
  • Review plans, specifications, cost estimates, and inspect sites during construction operations.
  • Establish preliminary programs and schedules to meet project needs and provide recommendations to the County Engineer regarding project delivery methods.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to ensure alignment and effective coordination.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices.
  • Provide regular updates and reports to senior management, stakeholders, and the public regarding departmental activities, achievements, and challenges.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Continuously seek professional development opportunities to enhance leadership skills and industry knowledge.
  • Program, design, draft, and write technical specifications for County projects.
  • Perform related duties and fulfill responsibilities as directed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in architecture from an accredited college or university.
  • Ten (10) years of increasingly responsible experience in managing architectural projects, with substantial experience in construction administration and management.
  • Knowledge of architectural principles and practices, particularly in the design and construction of governmental, commercial, and institutional buildings.
  • Understanding of building, development, and accessibility codes, as well as principles of sustainable building and facility design.
  • Familiarity with construction practices, materials, systems, and the ability to develop cost estimates and schedules for building projects.
  • Proficiency in using personal computers and associated software programs.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and knowledge of construction protocols and contract provisions.
  • Strong ability to prepare clear and concise reports, both narrative and graphic.
  • Excellent communication skills, including making presentations to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, stakeholder groups, public agencies, and the public.
  • Strong negotiation abilities with Architectural/Engineering teams, General Contractors, and vendors.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with a proven ability to effectively collaborate with team members and stakeholders, both internal and external, to drive project success and achieve organizational goals.

  • Master's degree in architecture from an accredited college or university.
