About The Position

The SCA’s Architecture and Engineering Department is responsible for development of scope, design, and construction documents for new school buildings, additions, lease conversions and renovation work of existing schools for New York City’s approximately 1.1 million students. Our projects are intentionally and thoughtfully designed; positive impact design is at the forefront of all our projects. Our In-House studio is a multidisciplinary practice that is responsible for designing some of the largest and most complex schools in our 1,500+ school portfolio as well as renovation work to existing schools. Our other two studios manage external consultants from design inception to completion. Our three studios are comprised of talented architects and engineers who are driven to deliver high quality custom designed, sustainable, and resilient public schools. The NYCSCA Design Department is seeking a talented and driven Computational Designer to join our forward-thinking, data-driven design studio. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Computational Design, or related fields (Master’s Degree preferred)
  • Strong skills in Rhino and Grasshopper for building complex parametric models
  • Knowledge of programming languages (Python or C# highly preferred)
  • 1 to 2 years of relevant experience in a professional Architectural firm, Urban Design, Planning, or Landscape Architectural preferred
  • Project portfolio showcasing parametric modeling
  • Ability to multi-task with a keen eye for detail and precision
  • Ability to deliver challenging project timeframes and deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Eagerness to learn and work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Critical thinking skills to develop innovative solutions

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with CFD, Daylight a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Computational / generative design and data analysis.
  • Explore emerging technologies and implement them in practice
  • Develop and implement computational design expertise across the department
  • Build computational models for various projects
  • Develop internal tools for efficiency and excellence
  • Collaborate with internal and external clients to understand their needs and develop strategies
  • Stay abreast of new and emerging technologies, best practices, and software applications
  • Communicate technical ideas in an accessible manner
  • Build quality relationships with team members and across the organization
  • Implement BIM workflows, Using Revit, Dynamo for automation and data manipulation.
  • Produce design documents for current projects, preparation of scope reports, preparing Revit/CAD contract drawings, detailing and shop drawing/submittals review and specifications.
  • Assist in the preparation of pre-schematic, schematic, design development and construction documents, including reports, drawings and simple specifications along with design review of submitted construction documents.
  • Assist in reviewing submittals, bids and addressing requests for information.
  • Assist in monitoring the progress of the construction phase of the project by conducting site observations, preparing field reports, punch lists and deficiency reports, etc.
  • Attend project kick-off meeting to discuss the nature of the project, budget, and time frames.
  • Coordinate and work with a wide range of technical, professional, managerial and support personnel, as well as outside vendors, contractors and government agencies.
