About The Position

The University of Virginia seeks applicants for the position of Architect/Planner in the Office of the Architect for the University. Under the direction of the Architect for the University, the Architect/Planner researches, develops, and prepares preliminary and final program plans for short- and long-range capital planning efforts and assists in the planning efforts and capital project development from concept through design and construction. The Architect/Planner also serves as a resource for the development, analysis, and synthesis of space utilization and facilities planning. The Office of the Architect functions as an integrated design team, where collaboration and open communication are paramount. The ideal candidate must be service-oriented and be able to work successfully on a large variety of projects as a key team member, either independently or in a multi-disciplinary group, in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. They must possess experience in producing planning and design related written and graphic work products. They must also possess strength in space utilization and benchmarking, overall program planning, and developing feasibility studies for capital projects and development of long-range capital planning and space allocation strategies. A sense of humor and experience with higher education is highly desirable for this application.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience: At least two years of experience in planning, design and development, architecture, historical preservation/conservation. Master's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.
  • Licensure: Professional registration in architecture or engineering is desirable.
  • Experience in producing planning and design related written and graphic work products.
  • Strength in space utilization and benchmarking, overall program planning, and developing feasibility studies for capital projects and development of long-range capital planning and space allocation strategies.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture or planning.
  • A minimum of 5-8 years of progressively relevant planning and/or design experience with an analytical background and strengths in space utilization, benchmarking, overall program planning, developing feasibility studies for capital projects and development of long-range capital planning and space allocation strategies.
  • Experience in higher education.
  • LEED AP accreditation preferred.
  • Excellent verbal, written and graphic communication skills.
  • Certification as a LEED Accredited Professional may be beneficial.
  • A sense of humor
