About The Position

The Architecture & Engineering Division (A&E) is looking for a professional with communication skills, and architecture, mechanical, electrical or other engineering field with construction knowledge to join our design team. Your supervisor will be an architect, and your coworkers are comprised of architects and engineers who work hard but enjoy having a good laugh. You will also work in conjunction with the construction management team. This position provides design-phase management of projects for the State of Montana. Projects range from minor remodels and deferred maintenance to new building construction.

Requirements

  • A degree in Architecture or Engineering from an accredited program.
  • A licensed Architect or Engineer or in the process of becoming professionally licensed.
  • Professional experience (minimum 5 years) in architectural design, planning, and construction management - ideally with public sector or consulting backgrounds.
  • Strong working knowledge of IBC, ADAAG, and sustainable building practices.
  • Experience with design and planning software, including Revit, Bluebeam, and MS Office suite.
  • The ability to balance multiple projects, engage diverse stakeholders, and communicate complex ideas clearly.
  • Alternate combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Knowledge of: The principles and practices of the architectural and civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering fields
  • Project administration and contract administration principles
  • The principles and practices of green building and energy efficient design
  • Ability to: Deliver professional customer service
  • Use interpersonal and communications skills including tact and diplomacy
  • Manage multiple projects and maintain focus on priorities
  • Collaborate with others to reach mutually beneficial goals and objectives
  • Exercise judgement and discretion to establish and maintain strong working relationships
  • Communicate effectively and professionally both verbally and in writing
  • Build consensus among a group of varying stakeholders
  • Identify problems, emerging issues and trends, and establish strategies to address them
  • Collaborate as a member of a diverse office team

Responsibilities

  • Management of external design professionals on capital projects, ensuring alignment with project goals, budgets, and timelines.
  • Guide/manage projects from inception, space planning, programming, cost estimating, construction documents, and through bidding and negotiations.
  • Advocate for long-term energy efficiency, building performance and accessibility.
  • Collaborate across disciplines, ensuring managers as well as building leaders are included in decisions impacting projects
  • Engage with city and state agencies, including permitting authorities and the State Historic Preservation Office to ensure effortless project approvals and compliance.
