About The Position

The Archeological Technician position at the National Park Service involves performing uncomplicated technical archeological tasks, including field surveys, excavation, and data processing. The role supports the professional field of archeology but does not require full expertise. The technician will work under supervision and contribute to the preservation and understanding of archeological sites.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in archeological field investigations, laboratory analysis, artifact cataloging, archival research, and database management.
  • Alternatively, one full year of graduate education directly related to archeology or a combination of specialized experience and education that equals 100%.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with GIS mapping and data entry.
  • Familiarity with outdoor safety and survival skills.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in basic archeological field surveys by walking over the landscape and searching for archeological features and artifacts.
  • Records data and prepares survey records, including GPS data, site maps, photographs, and surface artifact analysis forms.
  • Conducts excavation and testing of sites, including the careful recovery of sample materials and completing standard feature and level forms.
  • Screens soils to recover artifacts and performs flotation of soil samples.
  • Processes specimens recovered in the field and prepares them for dating laboratories.
  • Identifies, labels, and packages artifacts for curation and maintains field equipment and supplies.
  • Maintains related databases, forms, GIS maps, and files, entering archeological artifact and project data into automated systems.
  • Retrieves and compiles data for resource management reports and interpretive exhibits.
  • Conducts basic supervised research, including record searches and interviews, synthesizing information for scientific, historical, and interpretive values.
