About The Position

We are hiring! Atkins is seeking an Archaeology Field Director to join our Cultural Resources team in Atlanta, GA. In this role, you will lead archaeological field investigations for transportation, planning, and infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and other environmental regulations. You’ll play a critical role in managing field crews, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, and delivering high-quality cultural resource documentation that supports project success.

Requirements

  • At minimum, must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology.
  • Minimum 3+ years of Cultural Resource Management experience, including significant time in field leadership roles.
  • Proficiency in GPS data collection and mapping; intermediate experience with ArcGIS highly desired.
  • Familiarity with transportation and infrastructure projects; prior GDOT experience highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise crews and manage complex field projects from planning through completion.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple field tasks while meeting baseline schedules.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and regulatory agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage archaeological field investigations, ensuring strict adherence to Atkins safety protocols and project requirements.
  • Direct field crews during surveys, testing, and data recovery, providing clear guidance and maintaining quality control of all field documentation.
  • Coordinate closely with project managers, engineers, and environmental specialists to integrate cultural resource compliance into overall project schedules and design plans.
  • Oversee logistics for field operations, including scheduling, equipment, safety compliance, and resource allocation.
  • Review and validate field data, site forms, and mapping to ensure accuracy and completeness before submission.
  • Communicate findings and progress to internal teams and clients, addressing any issues that could impact project timelines or compliance.
  • Mentor and train junior field staff, fostering professional growth and adherence to best practices.
  • Travel to project sites as needed, with overnight stays required for extended fieldwork.
  • Contribute to site evaluations for archaeological resources for eligibility in the National Register of Historic Places, in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and other relevant environmental laws.
  • Contribute to technical reports and provide quality reviews of reports prepared by others, including creating project and resource location maps.
