About The Position

The Archaeologist position with the Department of the Interior involves applying professional knowledge of archaeological principles and methods to manage heritage resources. Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Must possess and maintain a current, valid state driver's license.
  • A degree that includes three semester hours each in history of archaeology, archaeology of a major geographical area, theory and methods of archaeology, and archaeological field school.
  • Six semester hours of related coursework in geography, geology, cultural geography, history, environmental studies, or scientific writing.
  • Four years of archaeological work experience demonstrating knowledge of professional archaeology principles.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in archaeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials.
  • Graduate education leading to a master's degree in archaeology or a directly related field.

Responsibilities

  • Apply professional knowledge of archaeological principles, theories, concepts, methods, and techniques to perform complex assignments related to heritage resource management.
  • Ensure compliance with Section 106/110 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
  • Recommend/determine eligibility of heritage resources for the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Provide recommendations for reducing/eliminating adverse impacts on heritage resources.
  • Write and prepare heritage and paleontological resource input for environmental documents.
  • Coordinate with other specialists for multiple use documents in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act.
  • Conduct outreach and educational activities about heritage resources in schools and community venues.
  • Promote participation and organize volunteers to protect/manage heritage and paleontological resources.
  • Provide instruction/guidance/information/interpretation of historic and prehistoric resources.
