Position OverviewThe contractor will work under the direction fo the Principal Archaeologist of the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), within the IL Dept. of Natural Resources, to conduct compliance reviews pursuant to the Illinois State Agency Historic Resources Preservation Act and the National Historic Preservation Act for effects to cultural resources and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Candidates must meet the Secretary of Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards for Archaeologist (sic) as published in 36 CFR Part 61:
  • Graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field plus;
  • At least one year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archaeological research, administration, or management;
  • At least four months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archaeology.
  • Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Requires appropriate, valid driver's license.
  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.

Nice To Haves

  • Candidate is a professional in prehistoric (sic) archaeology with at least one year of full-time professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of archaeological resources of the prehistoric (sic) period; or, a professional in historic archaeology shall have at least one year of full-time professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of archaeological resources of the historic period.
  • Has demonstrated success in developing positive relationships with descendant Native American tribes who claim Illinois as ancestral lands while conducting meaningful consultation during the Section 106 process.
  • Has a foundational knowledge of the cultural history and archaeological record of Illinois. More detailed knowledge of the cultural history and archaeological record of northern Illinois is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion.
  • Works well in a collaborative team environment by developing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts reviews for both the Federal review and compliance program under the National Historic Preservation Act and State program under the Illinois State Agency Historic Resource Preservation Act.
  • Conducts field inspections and archaeological site visits as needed.
  • Assists National Register Section staff with evaluations of archaeological sites for National Register eligibility and collaborates in the reviews of National Register Nominations for archaeological resources.
  • Provides technical support to agencies, organizations, and individuals pertaining to federal and state historic preservation laws and regulations.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
