The Animal Resources Center (ARC) at The University of Chicago is dedicated to supporting investigators in their animal research while ensuring the humane care of all laboratory animals. The ARC oversees the use and care of all research animals on campus, managing six facilities and a business office. The center's sections include husbandry, maintenance, operations, veterinary care, finance, and administration. The unit has merged with the Office of Shared Research Facilities, which manages all of the BSD cores on campus. The ARC Compliance & Training Specialist plays a crucial role in maintaining compliance with animal care protocols and ensuring the well-being of research animals. Under minimal supervision from the Director of Rodent Clinical Services, the specialist is responsible for conducting post-approval monitoring rounds and observing surgeries to ensure compliance with protocols and animal welfare standards. This position involves coordinating animal compliance issues and ensuring that special services procedure requests from investigators are congruent with established protocols. In addition to monitoring and compliance duties, the specialist will be involved in developing training programs and evaluating standard operating procedures (SOPs). They will co-lead the development and implementation of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) studies and participate in animal welfare and enrichment committee meetings, contributing new ideas and concepts for enhancing the well-being of research animals. The role also includes providing guidance and training to investigators on technical procedures and ensuring that all required documentation is completed and verified. Overall, the specialist will play a vital role in fostering a culture of compliance and continuous improvement within the ARC.
