About The Position

The Arboretum Botany Intern at James Madison University is a part-time position designed for students pursuing degrees in natural or environmental sciences. The intern will work under the supervision of the landscape manager, engaging in various tasks related to plant identification, cataloging, and inventory management within the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum. This role provides hands-on experience in botany and landscape management, requiring a commitment of 6-8 hours per week during weekdays.

Requirements

• Candidates must be enrolled at JMU, preferably pursuing a degree related to natural science or environmental science.
• Familiarity with scientific nomenclature and identifying plants using a dichotomous key.
• Basic computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
• Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills for design and development of plant ID processes.
• Ability to manage and keep a timely and consistent work week schedule.
• Organizational skills to maintain written and print materials to meet calendar deadlines.
• Ability to navigate uneven terrain and lift and carry at least 20 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Research plant identification as assigned and create computer-generated plant sale signs.
• Format and order permanent plant ID signs for specimen plants.
• Assist with cataloging plant collection inventories for the arboretum's various feature gardens.
• Work with the landscape manager to obtain new plant specimen sheets with numbers.
• Compile signage labeling supply resources and plant inventory materials, and generate plant and pot tags for plant sales.
• Manage written records and communications regarding arboretum plant inventories.
• Work during weekend plant sales (seasonal) when available.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
