This is a one-year Leave Replacement assignment for a Special Education Teacher at Arbor Heights Elementary, serving a Resource classroom. The teacher will work under the general direction of the building principal or program manager, with assistance from appropriate staff personnel. The role involves fostering and enhancing an effective learning environment, establishing and adapting learning objectives and standards for special education students based on district guidelines and regulations governing special education. The teacher will provide instruction, counseling, discipline, and supervision to meet the individual needs of assigned students, as well as evaluate student performance and progress. The teacher is expected to create an educational environment conducive to the learning and maturation process of assigned special education students. This includes planning an instructional program designed to meet individual student needs, preparing individual lesson plans, and adapting and modifying programs as necessary. The teacher will utilize appropriate instructional methods and materials suited to the well-being of the students and the nature of the learning activities, while implementing established program or curriculum objectives as adapted for the student population. Continuous professional growth through study and experimentation is encouraged to remain current in methods and techniques for special education instruction. In addition to instructional responsibilities, the teacher will establish and implement classroom policies and procedures governing student behavior and conduct, providing guidance and counseling to encourage students to meet standards of achievement and conduct. The teacher will also confer with students, parents or guardians, specialists, and other staff to maintain an open positive relationship, provide guidance and evaluation, and encourage student achievement. The role includes evaluating and recording student progress, preparing reports for parents or guardians, and directing the activities of assigned non-certificated personnel to attend to the physical, emotional, behavioral, medical, or hygienic needs of students as appropriate. The teacher will also collect and interpret data, develop, implement, and evaluate individual education plans (IEPs), and participate in required staff meetings and activities to accomplish the objectives of the position and for professional achievement.
