The City of Modesto is currently recruiting for an Aquatics Specialist to join our team. The Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department works closely with the community providing programming to youth, seniors and all citizens. As a department, we take our work seriously, but try not to take ourselves too seriously. We strive to foster a collaborative and collegial atmosphere among staff while providing high quality programs, activities and events to the community and neighborhoods. This position is responsible to plan, organize, direct and supervise staff at an aquatic program in an assigned swimming pool(s) and implementing and coordinating all aspects of specific programs, including meeting the program objectives.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of practices and techniques to achieve favorable public relations and appearance that projects a positive image.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of lifeguarding and water safety.
  • Knowledge of First Aid, CPR, and emergency medical methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of proper pool supervision techniques.
  • Knowledge of light pool maintenance and pool water chemistry.
  • Knowledge of water safety instructions.
  • Knowledge of light custodial maintenance techniques.
  • Ability to accommodate flexible work schedule, which may include evenings, weekdays, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform water rescue if necessary.
  • Ability to learn City and Service Area Methods, rules, policies, ordinances and requirements.
  • Ability to maintain timely and accurate reports.
  • Ability to learn the operation of various computer software programs.
  • Ability to understand, carry out and assign oral and written directions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during the course of work.
  • Ability to develop favorable public relations and maintain an appearance that projects a positive image.
  • Ability to think and react clearly, quickly and accurately in emergencies.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects; run forward, backward and laterally.
  • Ability to demonstrate beginning through advanced swim strokes and lifesaving techniques.
  • Ability to travel from worksite to worksite as needed.
  • Six (6) months part-time experience as a Lifeguard, Swim Instructor or similar position.
  • Required to attend, participate and complete all trainings as assigned. Including, but not limited to, Mandated Reporter training.
  • Possession of the below certificates are required to be obtained within 30 days of appointment in order to be scheduled and must be maintained for continued employment.
  • American Red Cross First Aid Certificate
  • American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Certificate
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate
  • American Red Cross Title 22 - First Aid for Public Safety Personnel Certificate
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • NOTE: If hired, you will be required to be fingerprinted at time of appointment, in compliance with Section 10911-5 of the Education Code and Section 5164 of the Public Resources Code. In addition, it is the City's policy to not hire individuals convicted of any crime involving moral turpitude, including, but not limited to: an offense involving conduct requiring registration pursuant to Penal Code Section 290 (sex offender); an offense involving sexual misconduct with children; an offense involving prostitution (including solicitation). or an offense involving conduct requiring registration pursuant to Health and Safety Code Section 11590 (controlled substance offenders) or any felony offense involving drugs (including possession, sale, distribution, transporting or conspiracy). or a felony offense involving the use of force and violence upon a person or another, or a misdemeanor offense for same within the last five (5) years.

Responsibilities

  • Create, plan, organize and oversee all daily activities and special events of assigned pool.
  • Maintain an efficient and safe environment for all on-site staff and pool patrons; follow accepted lifesaving practices and standards.
  • Oversee all on-site staff and volunteers to ensure that staff carries out assigned duties.
  • Meet program goals and objectives as well as collecting and maintaining relevant statistical records and data.
  • Ensure all record keeping, reports, testing and all paperwork is completed correctly and submitted on time following established guidelines.
  • Ensure daily completion of pool opening and closing procedures are observed.
  • Act in capacity of pool lifeguard and swim instructor.
  • Maintain on-site security and safety.
  • Ensure that all staff and volunteers adhere to all City and Program rules and guidelines and provides necessary discipline and accurate records of all incidents.
  • Maintain a safe and clean swimming pool environment.
  • Perform other program-related duties as assigned.
  • Ensure facilities and equipment is maintained in safe condition; issue and control equipment and supplies.
  • Assist with orientation meetings for part-time staff; assist with training part-time staff; and work with part-time staff.
  • Assist in scheduling specific program hours and schedule and assign staff to provide program coverage, including contacting off-duty employees to make necessary adjustments in schedules.
  • Provide reliable customer service while promoting facility programs.
  • Maintain and submit detailed reports and records as required. Monitor and coach assigned staff ensuring all rules, policies and procedures are enforced; follow up on problems and complaints.
  • Operate and perform basic pool maintenance.
