About The Position

In accordance with the YMCA's Christian Principles, a lifeguard supervises the aquatic facility and/or aquatic activities to secure and ensure the safety of all those involved. A lifeguard also maintains all areas in and around the aquatic facility. These duties are performed while practicing the YMCA's Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.

Requirements

  • Must hold and maintain current YMCA or American Red Cross Training Certifications in the following areas: of Lifeguarding of CPRforthe Professional Rescuer; First Aid Training
  • Must be mature, dependable, and have a proven aquatic background.
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Must have at least 2 years of experience.
  • Must exemplify the character values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Aquatic Director in the supervision of staff
  • Assist the Aquatic Director with scheduling of staff.
  • Average a minimum of 25 hours per week guarding shifts or teaching swim lessons change seasonally.
  • Average a minimum of 15 hours per week on leadership duties.- may change seasonally
  • Not to exceed 40 hours per week.
  • Ability to lift a minimum 50 pounds
  • Thorough knowledge of all aquatic programming.
  • Help coordinate special events such as birthday parties, pool parties, and swim meets.
  • Help get pools ready for pool inspections.
  • Maintain accurate records for water readings, schedules, and maintenance cleaning schedules.
  • Recruit and train staff to ensure the highest safety standards and quality programming.
  • Know and enforce aquatic rules, procedures, policies, and guidelines.
  • Dress appropriately for leadership and front-line duties, i.e. swim instructor or lifeguard
  • Able to deal with members’ concerns and needs in a professional manner.
  • Return aquatics department phone calls as necessary
  • Ensure that all opening and closing procedures are followed.
  • Report problems and violations to the supervisor.
  • Help the Aquatics Director plan and assist with in-service training.
  • Attend all in-service training
  • Ensure information is communicated with the Aquatics Director in a timely manner
  • Perform other duties and obtain additional training as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Follow employee's and volunteers' screening requirements and use screening instruments to screen for abuse risk.
  • Provide employees and volunteers with ongoing supervision and training related to abuse risk.
  • Provide employees and volunteers with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with children and teens.
  • Require employees and volunteers to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse risk.
