This position supervises and actively participates in daily group swim lessons, as well as private and adaptive swim instruction. The role is designed to model professionalism and positive leadership for aquatic staff while fostering a safe, inclusive, and character-building learning environment. In addition to frontline instruction, this position assists the Aquatics Director with managing swim lesson schedules, maintaining instructor certifications, and ensuring quality, consistency, and progression across swim lesson levels. The role also includes outbound communication with parents and guardians, providing updates on participant progress and addressing questions or concerns as needed.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Team-oriented with a strong personal commitment to the YMCA mission and Character Development values
  • People-centered and service-oriented
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Current swim lesson instructor and lifeguard certifications (or ability to obtain)
  • Availability to work 2–3 evenings per week and Saturday mornings

Responsibilities

  • Uphold and promote the mission and values of the YMCA
  • Maintain all required certifications and training
  • Take full responsibility for scheduled work hours, including following established substitute procedures and covering shifts when necessary
  • Adhere to weekly work schedule requirements as established by the Aquatics Director
  • Work special events as assigned
  • Manage and coordinate swim instructor staff schedules
  • Assist the Sr. Aquatics Director in planning and conducting monthly in-service trainings
  • Assist the Sr. Aquatics Director in conducting regular audits and evaluations of swim instructors
  • Assist with staff onboarding and training
  • Obtain at least one trainer-level certification within the first six months of employment
  • Maintain inventory of pool supplies and notify the Sr. Aquatics Director when items need to be ordered
  • Attend all required staff meetings and trainings
  • Perform other duties as assigned
