The Aquatics Assistant at Princeton University is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the university's swimming pools and fountains, ensuring they meet the highest standards required for a Division I athletic program. This role involves a variety of tasks that can change based on events and seasons, requiring both independent and collaborative work, as well as problem-solving skills to address equipment issues. The assistant will also provide excellent customer service to coaches, staff, and visiting teams.

  • Sweep, mop, and sanitize the pool deck and facility.
  • Empty trash cans and maintain cleanliness in the spectator stands.
  • Move and set up equipment based on facility needs.
  • Assist with salting and shoveling during winter storms.
  • Perform pool chemical checks and maintain logs as required by the NJ Department of Health.
  • Maintain pool chemicals within required ranges and calibrate chemical controllers.
  • Transport equipment and chemicals between pools and fountains.
  • Maintain pool filtration systems, including backwashing and cleaning strainers.
  • Perform pool maintenance tasks such as vacuuming and skimming.
  • Complete daily setup of the pool including lane lines, flags, and starting blocks.
  • Maintain diving boards and diving facilities.
  • Set up and test timing equipment, scoreboards, and public address systems for events.
  • Coordinate setup needs with supervisors and coaches to minimize interference with practices.
  • Cover events as scheduled, including nights and weekends, and clean up efficiently afterward.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs on equipment and facilities.
  • Troubleshoot and repair various athletic program equipment and pool equipment.
  • Assist with securing facilities and equipment at the end of shifts.
  • Provide customer service as a point of contact for coaches and external groups.
  • Work with outside contractors and university trades for upkeep of swimming pools.
  • Maintain university fountains, including cleaning and chemical checks.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to demonstrate dependability and flexibility in work schedule.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and work with minimal supervision.
  • Swimming pool experience.
  • Certified Pool Operators license or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
  • Lifeguard Certified or ability to become certified within 90 days of employment.
  • Effective communication skills with students, faculty, and the general public.
  • Adherence to Ivy League and NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Strong familiarity with operations of electronic and mechanical equipment for minor adjustments.
  • Basic familiarity with hand tools and a high level of mechanical aptitude.
  • Familiarity with aquatic sports (swimming, diving, water polo) and NCAA requirements.
  • Previous experience in an NCAA athletic environment.
  • Eligible for overtime pay.
