About The Position

This position supports the work of the Bloomington-Normal YMCA, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Under the supervision of the Senior Aquatic Director, the Aquatic Supervisor supports the daily operations of aquatic programs and helps maintain a positive, safe, and welcoming environment for all participants. This role assists with staff training and development, ensures high standards of safety and service delivery, and promotes an enjoyable experience for members and guests. The Aquatic Supervisor contributes to fostering a community atmosphere that reflects the mission and values of the BNYMCA while supporting the effective and efficient operation of all aquatic activities in accordance with BNYMCA policies and procedures. Requirements

  • 1-2 years of related experience.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification.
  • Ability to connect effectively with diverse groups of people.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in basic computer programs.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergencies.
  • Must be mentally alert to dangerous situations in order to ensure the safety of all swimmers.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer CPR, and First Aid effectively.
  • Physical mobility to properly use safety equipment to rescue a 200+-pound person.
  • Must be able to see, hear, and communicate clearly and be able to hear noises and distress signals in the aquatics environment.
  • Able to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic to complete daily chemical logs.
  • Swim with proficiency and endurance for possible rescues.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly with members and staff.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor.
  • Proficiency in Spanish (written and spoken).
  • Possession of the Spanish language, both written and spoken.
  • Certified American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor.

Responsibilities

  • Provides shift supervision.
  • Assists in staff recruitment, training, and development.
  • Supports feedback and coaching for team members.
  • Contributes to community campaign efforts and donor engagement.
  • Models relationship-building in all interactions.
  • Addresses member and community inquiries and concerns according to YMCA procedures.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
