About The Position

Cleveland Metroparks is seeking applicants to work on an Ohio Department of Natural Resources funded project to expand the detection and control of invasive aquatic plants in Cleveland Metroparks and Ohio's Lake Erie Basin. The Natural Resources Specialist 2 is a mid-level, experienced field worker seasonal position that assists Natural Resources Division staff in day-to-day or project-related management, i.e., maintenance and restoration, or research and monitoring of the natural resources in Cleveland Metroparks and northeastern Ohio. Aquatic Invasive Species Project Crew responsibilities include: Conducts aquatic invasive species surveys using Cleveland Metroparks protocols Sampling and identification of aquatic plants Assists in the development of reports, performing data entry and/or verification and making presentations related to assigned projects when directed Aquatic resource management, including invasive species control, nuisance weed management, and habitat enhancement/restoration Working in aquatic environments, including wading in streams/rivers and working from small watercraft

Requirements

  • Must have completed two years of college courses with relevant course work and/or educational experience in natural resources, natural sciences, i.e., biology, geology, hydrology, etc., forestry, wildlife management, environmental science or related fields. At least six months of field experience, research experience, or other directly relevant job experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license under the laws of the State of Ohio.
  • Knowledge and practical outdoor work experience including plant, insect, mammal, or bird identification skills, farming, forestry, hydrology, aquatic ecology, civil engineering or a strong desire and aptitude to develop these skills. For research related positions, knowledge and experience in research methods is desirable.
  • Ability to read maps, follow written directions, and navigate through forest or wetland areas.
  • Experience in computer applications including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, and/or GIS and GPS and associated hardware is desirable.
  • Ability to hike on varied terrain for up to 7-8 hours per day through challenging terrain including heavy vegetation, wetlands, and steep slopes.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors and tolerate the climate and conditions of natural areas typical of northeast Ohio (including heat, humidity, poison ivy, and biting/stinging insects)
  • Energy and enthusiasm for field work.
  • Demonstrated responsible attitude and work ethic.
  • Positive disposition and ability to work well with a diverse team to achieve project goals in a timely manner.
  • Communicates well and continually updates co-workers and supervisor of progress and problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders, including employees and park visitors.
  • Ability to speak and write clearly, concisely and persuasively using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation with ability to communicate one-on-one or in group settings.
  • Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and organization.
  • Ability to perform with considerable independence and initiative.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of natural resource conservation practices and procedures preferred
  • Experience in computer applications including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, and/or GIS and GPS and associated hardware is desirable.
