About The Position

AQUATIC INSTRUCTOR Under limited supervision, the Aquatic Fitness Instructor role provides support and leadership in all aspects of the aquatic fitness program. They lead, instruct and motivate participants in group fitness classes that are specialized to the aquatic environment, including cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and range of motion. They are responsible for coaching participants through safe and effective exercise programming including motivating energetically, providing feedback, assessing strengths and weaknesses, clearly communicating and creating a community of wellness. The Parks and Recreation department is seeking individuals to work in Ongoing/Varied and Seasonal roles. We will be hiring multiple employees based on our programs and hours of operation. Please keep in mind that the city’s benefit package offer will differ based upon work hours and the duration of the assignment you accept. • Ongoing/Varied: Work less than 20 hours/week with no planned end date to work. No medical, dental, or vision insurance is available, but employees receive benefits including sick time-off, wellness program, EcoPass for transit, recreation pass, and retirement plans. • Seasonal Max: March – September. Work six (6) to 11 months, averaging more than 30 hours/week. Medical insurance is offered, but not dental or vision insurance. Work less than six (6) months, averaging more than 30 hours/week. Work less than 11 months, averaging less than 30 hours/week. Requirements

  • Ability to evaluate conditions in assigned work area and make judgments related to safety.
  • Ability to teach aquatic fitness from the deck and in the water.
  • Ability to plan and instruct classes as assigned.
  • Ability to demonstrate previous educational, volunteer or employment experience in aquatic fitness.
  • Ability to collaborate with co-instructors about lesson plan ideas.
  • Work closely with coordinator and water safety program lead.
  • Willingness to accept and provide feedback.
  • Ability to maintain a clean and neat appearance.
  • Ability to communicate professionally, courteously, and effectively verbally and in writing with other staff members and the public.
  • Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history .
  • AEA, ACE, ASFA, IFPA or other nationally recognized certification
  • Three (3) years of customer service experience which includes experience in group fitness and or aquatics class instruction.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology, kinesiology, exercise science or related degree
  • Nationally recognized certification or training in addition to base certification.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification.

Responsibilities

  • Teaches group aquatic fitness classes such as Aquafit in shallow or deep water, Aqua Zumba or Aqua Yoga formats to participants of all ages from youth to older adults (ages 12+). May also teach specialized formats based on qualifications.
  • Modifies program plans as needed to meet class objectives and participant needs.
  • Displays a positive and professional attitude.
  • Performs a customer relations role which includes interacting with parents, participants, business or program partners, and/or city staff to provide information and solve problems.
  • Provides appropriate feedback to class participants on proper techniques and overall performance.
  • Provides technique modifications to participants as needed.
  • Maintains any reports (attendance, etc.) as required.
  • Sets up equipment and/or supplies for each class prior to class start time.
  • Cleans up equipment at the end of class.
  • Attends all trainings, orientations and/or staff meetings as required.
