About The Position

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. At the Y, we purposefully engage members throughout their health and wellness journeys. Aqua fitness is one of many ways the Y support members on their path to achieving health and wellness goals. The Aqua Fitness Instructor teaches class in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 18 years old
  • CPR, AED and First Aid Certifications required within 90 days
  • Current Praesidium Academy trainings

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred National Certifications: Y-USA Aqua Fitness or YUSA Aqua Arthritis or AEA (Aquatic Educators Association)
  • At least one year of experience teaching group wellness classes preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
  • Answers questions from members to support them in achieving their goals related to healthy living.
  • Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with members.
  • Helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Keeps accurate class attendance records.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Responds to emergency situations and assists lifeguards as directed.
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings to stay current with latest fitness trends and educational information.
  • Instructs scheduled class(es) at least 90% of each quarterly session.
  • When unable to work, instructors are responsible for obtaining their substitutes from the current staff list and notifying their supervisor of arrangements.
  • Creates a noncompetitive and inclusive atmosphere welcoming to all members and staff.
  • Ensures a strong focus on character development and diversity, equity and inclusion throughout programming.
  • Assesses each class to determine their ability to follow your instructions.
  • Adjusts the workout to the various skill levels of class participants.
  • Offers exercise modifications frequently.
  • Changes music and movements frequently.
  • Seeks to promote retention with each class.
  • Reports damaged equipment or safety hazards promptly.
  • Performs any other functions necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the YMCA of Rock River Valley.
