About The Position

DEFINITION To participate in the performance of a variety of semi-skilled tasks related to the power plant operation and power plant maintenance. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives general supervision from the Power Plant Chief Operator or Power Plant Shift Operator or Power Plant Assistant Operator. Exercises no supervision. ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS - Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Essential Functions: Participate in the operation, maintenance and repair of the Electric Utility Power Plant. Assist in the performance of tests on water in boilers, softeners and towers; adds chemicals determined from routine lab tests. Assist and perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repair on machinery and equipment including checking oil levels, motors, pump and fan operations. Assist maintenance technicians and other personnel in plant maintenance. Operate various equipment including computer, overhead crane, bucket trucks, drill press, band saw, cutting torch, welder, pipe threading machine, variety of lab equipment, and various hand tools. Ensure the adherence to safe work practices, policies and procedures of plant operations by assigned staff. Marginal Functions: Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Requirements

  • Basic power plant system design, maintenance and repair.
  • Basic procedures and techniques essential to maintenance and operation of electric generating equipment.
  • Occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions.
  • Basic accounting and mathematical principles.
  • Procedures, methods and techniques of record keeping.
  • Pertinent Federal, State and Local laws, codes and regulations.
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.
  • Learn to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals.
  • Conduct routine lab tests and take action when tests so indicate.
  • Operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Interpret and apply federal, state and local policies, laws and regulations.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations of the Electric Utility Department.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following: Walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time Lifting and/or carrying heavy objects Operating forklift Climb stairs or ladders Conduct inspections Disassemble and assemble mechanical equipment
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: Making observations Communicating with others Reading and writing Evaluating status of equipment Operating assigned equipment Answering questions Speaking in a clear and audible voice Monitoring activities and operations Effectively working with numbers Evaluating the performance of mechanical and electrical machinery and hand tools
  • Maintain mental capacity that permits: Making sound decisions and using good judgment Communicating clearly Responding to questions
  • Effectively handle a work environment and conditions that involve: Plant work Exposure to high dosage of electricity High level of noise Potentially dangerous equipment and machinery.
  • One year of experience in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment.
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid State of Kansas Drivers License
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid C.P.R. Certificate.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid First Aid Certificate.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid forklift license.
  • May be required to obtain, an appropriate, valid Class II Asbestos Certificate.
