About The Position

The Apprentice/Technician/Journey Substation Construction Technician position at Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) involves the construction and maintenance of substations and associated electrical equipment within T&D Operations. The role requires physical labor, including climbing steel towers and operating heavy equipment, while ensuring safety and compliance with specifications. Technicians will also assist in storm restoration and respond to emergencies, with a significant amount of travel required for the job.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree in a related field preferred.
  • Two years of construction-type work required for Apprentice level.
  • Experience as outlined in the Construction Technician Progression Program for Substation Construction Technician level.
  • Five years of combined experience at the Apprentice and Substation Construction Technician levels for Journey level.
  • Must maintain CPR/AED and first aid certifications.
  • Obtain and maintain a commercial driver's license (CDL) within six months.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with heavy equipment operation.
  • Previous experience in electrical construction or maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Lay out Operations worksite according to drawings and specifications.
  • Build concrete forms, place and finish concrete to meet specifications.
  • Place rebar and anchor bolts as required.
  • Interpret one-line electrical, mechanical, and structural drawings.
  • Apply chemicals safely for vegetation management of Operations worksites.
  • Maintain favorable public relations with property owners and customers.
  • Assemble and erect steel structures, towers, and substation equipment stands using proper rigging and safety procedures.
  • Install electrical equipment, transformers, breakers, underground cable, and ground field.
  • Assemble, mount, and adjust substation switches.
  • Install substation bus work and connect substation equipment.
  • Safely operate and maintain skid loaders, trenchers, and other heavy equipment associated with construction.
  • Accountable for other duties as assigned.
