The Apprentice Stationary Engineer position at the John Stanford Center for Educational Excellence is a full-time role under the direction of the Mechanical Coordinator Lead. This position involves various duties related to the operation, servicing, and maintenance of District HVAC systems. The role requires independent judgment and action, with decisions made in accordance with departmental policies, the Seattle Boiler Code, and Washington State Standards of Apprenticeship. This apprenticeship program spans four years, totaling 8000 hours, during which the apprentice will work 40 hours per week. The apprentice will also attend classes and supplemental instruction after hours and on weekends, which will be on their own time. The essential functions of this role include assisting in the operation of plant equipment such as boilers, chillers, pumps, cooling towers, and energy management control systems. The apprentice will monitor both on-site and remote plant operations to ensure that equipment and systems are functioning within design standards. They will also be responsible for making necessary adjustments to improve system operations and advising operations personnel of any system anomalies. Additionally, the apprentice will inspect buildings to ensure proper system operation and coordinate schedules with building personnel. The role also involves servicing and maintaining HVAC systems, including direct digital controls, filters, and belts. The apprentice will prepare work orders, respond to HVAC problem calls, troubleshoot issues, and perform preventive maintenance tasks. Safety standards must be adhered to, including lockout/tagout requirements and emergency procedures. The apprentice will also engage in fabrication, soldering, and brazing as required, and perform related work as necessary.
