About The Position

The Apprentice position at Peoples Gas System in Sarasota, Florida, involves assisting in the layout, fabrication, and installation of gas distribution systems. This role is designed for individuals with minimal experience in the natural gas industry, providing training to ensure they can effectively perform various tasks related to gas services, including installation, maintenance, and safety compliance. The Apprentice will work closely with company personnel and the public, adhering to safety standards and company policies.

Requirements

  • Valid High School Diploma or Valid G.E.D.
  • Valid driver's license with a safe driving record.
  • Basic map reading skills and ability to operate power tools and communication devices.
  • Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions.
  • Basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, and fractions.

Nice To Haves

  • One to two years of natural gas or utility work experience or related work experience (such as propane, pipe fitting, etc.).
  • Two or more years of direct work experience performing the duties and responsibilities of a gas locator.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the layout, fabrication, and installation of gas distribution systems.
  • Turn on and turn off gas services, appliances, and equipment.
  • Read meters and meter instruments.
  • Perform the duties of a line locator.
  • Assist in the installation, removal, change-out, or upgrade of service regulators and meter sets.
  • Assist in the start-up of conversion burners.
  • Assist in the installation and maintenance of underground/above ground distribution/transmission mains, services, equipment, and meter activity, including minor repairs and adjustments.
  • Assist in plastic pipe fusion, tapping, and stopping operations.
  • Operate hydraulic tools, backhoe, and other machines used in natural gas operations.
  • Investigate inside and outside natural gas leaks.
  • Use a hand-held radio device with internet capability to manage service orders.
  • Utilize a laptop computer for mapping, work orders, training, and employee self-service tasks.
  • Work overtime as needed, including weekends and holidays, in response to gas emergencies.
  • Participate in Call Out and Stand-by schedules on a rotating basis.
