About The Position

The Apprentice Laborer position at Des Moines Public School District is a full-time role within the Facility Services department. The primary purpose of this position is to provide labor support for various operational tasks, including maintenance and repair of district properties, equipment operation, and metal fabrication. The role requires independent judgment and effective communication skills, as well as the ability to work under the guidance of the Laborer Foreman.

Requirements

• Two years or more of consistent work experience and/or extracurricular activities.
• Willingness and ability to complete the apprenticeship program.
• CDL Class B and airbrake required or willingness to obtain within 90 days.
• Valid Driver's License with a driving record that aligns with the District's motor vehicle record requirement.

Nice To Haves

• Pesticide applicators certification.
• Successful completion of 40 hours asbestos Contractor/Supervisor training.

Responsibilities

• Carry out all policies and procedures set forth by the Facility Services.
• Provide prompt, courteous, and excellent service.
• Work under the direction of the ground's foreman or general foreman.
• Provide labor to repair grounds, install fences, and assist in playground equipment installation.
• Trim and remove trees and plants on district property.
• Operate heavy equipment, including skid loader, dump truck, and front-end loader.
• Remove snow using a truck with a plow.
• Perform mowing for district property.
• Conduct small engine work.
• Pour and finish concrete, perform blacktop work, fertilize and seed ground, maintain ball fields, lay sod, move furniture, install/maintain signs, and haul trash.
• Perform metal fabrication including stick/mig welding, plasma cutting, and basic fabrication skills.
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing in English.
• Complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
