About The Position

The Tax Assessor's Office is seeking an Appraiser to join their team. The successful candidate may be hired in at Appraiser level III (Pay Grade 117) or Appraiser level IV (Pay Grade 118), depending on qualifications. The purpose of the Appraiser III job is to make field appraisals of the more difficult and complex residential and light commercial properties using the most appropriate of the three approaches to value. Duties include gathering records, analyzing and maintaining data, investigating complaints about property assessments, making reappraisals, and preparing technical cases for court proceedings. The Appraiser IV position involves similar responsibilities but focuses on very difficult and complex properties and requires a higher level of experience and education.

Requirements

  • For Appraiser III: High school diploma or equivalent with four years of mass appraisal or related experience.
  • For Appraiser IV: Bachelor's degree or equivalent with six years of mass appraisal or related experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Requires Appraiser III certification for Appraiser III position.
  • Requires Appraiser IV certification for Appraiser IV position.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with GIS and computer-aided design operations.
  • Knowledge of local zoning laws and property regulations.
  • Experience in training or supervising staff.

Responsibilities

  • Make field appraisals of residential and light commercial properties.
  • Gather and analyze data including selling prices, rental income, and depreciation schedules.
  • Investigate complaints about property assessments.
  • Prepare and support technical cases for contested assessments in court.
  • Conduct on-site reviews and measure structures for appraisal.
  • Update appraisals for remodeled and renovated properties.
  • Assist with appraising commercial real estate and maintain current information in the computer system.
  • Train new personnel in appraisal procedures and computer systems.
  • Prepare appraisal documents and defend values in hearings.
