The Applied Sciences Laboratory at SRI International is seeking multiple Applied and Computational Scientists to conduct research and development in the areas of quantum algorithm design, reinforcement learning, and emerging AI models. Though knowledge in one or more of these areas is desired, the ability to quickly learn new topics and dive into unfamiliar areas of research is a key ability that will be required. These positions will be in support of a new computational and mathematical sciences team at SRI International headquarters in Menlo Park, CA, with flexibility for a hybrid work schedule. Our team focuses on the development of new algorithms for a wide variety of exciting applications including supply chain networks, social graphs, optimization of generative AI models, material failures, quantum algorithms, and biological systems. The aim of the team is to conduct and publish research at top venues and assist SRI commercialize relevant technologies by filing patents and spinning out start-ups.

  • Develop research ideas, lead the experimental evaluation of these ideas, present work to government and commercial clients
  • Collaborate with project Principal Investigators (PIs) and their staff in academia, Industrial and National Labs
  • Document research in technical reports and research papers
  • Write Proposals
  • Propose ideas against funding opportunities
  • Develop and implement new algorithms and benchmark against state of the art approaches
  • Upon successful program awards the position will transition into PI function
  • Some travel will be required to project meetings, and conference venues
  • Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, Physics or Engineering with a focus on Computational Sciences, Computer Science or related area
  • Demonstrated publication record
  • Candidates must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Expertise in algorithm development associated with quantum error correction, development of quantum algorithms tailored to specific hardware, artificial intelligence, algorithm design, scalable computational methods and their implementations
  • Demonstrated experience implementing novel algorithms in one or more programming languages such as Python, C/C++, and libraries associated with implementing quantum algorithms (such as Qiskit, PennyLane, Cirq, etc) training of AI models
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills required
