About The Position

The Health Informatics Institute (HII) is comprised of approximately 150 members consisting of biostatisticians and bioinformaticians; epidemiologists; software, data, and systems engineers; solution and data architects; laboratory and clinical research administrators; and administrative staff. Members are engaged in research focused on the prevention of diabetes and other autoimmune diseases, cancer prevention and control, genetic disorders, and an expanding list of rare diseases. The Health Informatics Institute is currently looking for an Applications Developer III. This position will interact with a diverse staff of scientists, statisticians, engineers, and administrators in the development of datasets, reports, and systems supporting research efforts at the HII. As a part of the Data Engineering team, the Applications Developer III efforts will span the data lifecycle with an emphasis on ETL, reporting, cleaning, and sharing of data. They will utilize their expertise to manage data from a variety of sources including relational and unstructured/NoSQL databases and satisfy stakeholders from statisticians and scientists to clinical operations staff, sponsors, and regulatory agencies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS or other field involving software and analytical training, and four years of IT related work experience, OR a Bachelor's degree with no specific required field and five years of IT related work experience, OR a Master's degree and three years of IT related work experience, OR a combination of eight years of IT related work experience and validated training.
  • Preparation for a relevant IT certification is considered to be related training.
  • Four years of direct experience for a bachelor’s degree.

  • A public employer may include a postsecondary degree as a baseline requirement only as an alternative to the number of years of direct experience required, not to exceed:
  • (a) Two years of direct experience for an associate degree;
  • (b) Four years of direct experience for a bachelor’s degree;
  • (c) Six years of direct experience for a master’s degree;
  • (d) Seven years of direct experience for a professional degree; or
  • (e) Nine years of direct experience for a doctoral degree
  • Related work experience may not substitute for any required licensure, certification, or registration required for the position of employment as established by the public employer and indicated in the advertised description of the position of employment.
  • Minimum Qualifications that require a high school diploma are exempt from SB 1310.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in an information technology, quantitative, scientific, or related field.
  • Previous experience with applications programming and reporting within healthcare or clinical research, biostatistics and/or bioinformatics, one or more programming languages in addition to SAS, big data concepts and implementation including applications, analytics, and systems.
  • Candidates should have attention to detail, strong interpersonal communication skills, excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, flexibility and creativity in delivering on stated objectives, ability to adapt and adjust to changing priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop analysis programs and reports to monitor data accrual and quality.
  • Develop and implement complex data manipulations for checking data completeness and accuracy.
  • Develop programs to extract subsets and summaries from a variety of sources, including large and complex databases (structured and unstructured; Big Data).
  • Develop complex systems for ensuring data integrity, in-house data monitoring and study status reports, and clinical trial database systems.
  • Develop and maintain domain knowledge of complex and expansive enterprise applications.
  • Develop and maintain requisite expertise for ongoing and future institutional data management demands.
  • Interact directly with faculty and operations staff to learn study objectives and develop project requirements.
  • Interface effectively with laboratories, analytical partners, regulatory agencies, etc. in execution of projects.
  • Contribute to the documentation, interpretation, and preparation of data for analysis.
  • Assist in new data acquisition and exploration.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of analysis software pipelines for conducting genomics, transcriptomics, microbiomics, metabolomics, proteomics, etc.
  • Efficiently coordinate activities with other team members.
  • Take initiative to provide expertise and assistance when needed.
  • Comply with and provide input in the creation of standard operating procedures.
  • Proactively inform management of the status of deliverables, timelines, accomplishments, and issues experienced and remediated on projects.
  • Ensure analysis data and programming code integrity and reliability.
  • Apply best practices to the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of programs.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures related to data governance and promote adherence throughout the Data Engineering team and institute at large.
  • Participate in the strategic planning of future technology needs to accommodate the lifetime span of grants.
  • Act as a mentor and promote the dissemination of knowledge throughout the Data Engineering team.
