The Applications and Data Programmer at Virginia Tech's Finance Information Technology (FIT) department plays a crucial role in enhancing administrative efficiencies through innovative technology solutions. This position involves developing and maintaining data management systems, creating data collection and reporting applications, and supporting web-based systems. The programmer will assess user needs, design and implement solutions, and provide support for cyclical operations, all while ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

  • Develop and maintain data management systems and processes.
  • Create data collection and reporting applications.
  • Support web-based systems and reports.
  • Assess information technology needs of end users and develop strategies to meet those needs.
  • Design, develop, test, and implement agreed-upon solutions.
  • Implement and maintain systems in accordance with university, state, and federal laws, policies, and regulations.
  • Work on multiple projects simultaneously and independently prioritize tasks to meet project deadlines.
  • Provide scheduled support services to cyclical operations requiring business information technology and reporting expertise.
  • Deliver responsive and courteous services to support data management and reporting needs.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Experience with relational database design, SQL, and data retrieval.
  • Experience with object-oriented design concepts and web design.
  • Experience converting user specifications into functional project requirements and modeling complex business processes.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and independently prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts at a level appropriate to the intended audience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively with minimal supervision in a team situation.
  • Advanced degree in Business Information Technology, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Experience developing applications using the .NET framework, including C# or Visual Basic.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office 365 technologies such as SharePoint, PowerApps, and Flow.
  • Experience with business intelligence or report development tools (e.g. MicroStrategy, SAS, Crystal Reports, Access, Power BI).
  • Experience supporting production applications.
  • Familiarity with basic financial and accounting practices.
