We are seeking a detail-oriented and technically proficient BAS Application Engineer to join our Engineering team, reporting directly to the Engineering Manager. This role is responsible for the critical design, programming, and documentation phases of our Building Automation System (BAS) projects. The Application Engineer translates client specifications and mechanical plans into working control strategies, hardware selections, and functional system graphics, ensuring the seamless transition of projects from design to field installation.

  • Hardware Engineering and Submittals Design Development: Produce professional and accurate BAS hardware design submittals, including point-to-point wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and sequence of operation narratives. Utilize Visio or our Visio-based software tool.
  • Component Selection: Select and size appropriate BAS controls hardware, including controllers, sensors, actuators, valves, and field devices, ensuring compliance with project specifications and industry standards.
  • Submittal Management: Prepare, organize, and manage the technical submittal package process for review by clients, consulting engineers, and general contractors.
  • Design Collaboration: Collaborate with the Engineering Manager and Project Manager to evaluate and incorporate feedback from the submittal review process and address Requests for Information (RFIs).
  • Control Logic Programming: Develop and implement detailed control logic programs for building automation systems (BAS) using industry-standard tools and programming languages (e.g., Tridium Niagara, ladder logic, function block).
  • Sequence Interpretation: Analyze and interpret complex mechanical sequences of operation (SOO) and design efficient, energy-saving control strategies (e.g., reset schedules, optimization routines).
  • Software Troubleshooting: Support the Field Operations team by providing technical assistance and remote troubleshooting for control logic and programming issues during the commissioning and startup phases. This may require on-site presence to work with field specialists.
  • Graphics Development: Design and develop custom graphical user interfaces (GUIs) and dashboards for BAS front-end systems, focusing on intuitive user experience (UI/UX).
  • Visualization: Optimize graphic performance for real-time visualization, monitoring, and operator control of HVAC, lighting, and other building systems.
  • Standards: Ensure all developed graphics comply with company and client aesthetic and functional standards.
  • Inter-Departmental Support: Support estimating teams by using our engineering design software. Review existing field conditions for preparing controls drawings and verifying project intent. Work closely with the Field Operations team to ensure designs are practical and provide clear documentation for field implementation.
  • Process Improvement: Participate in the development and documentation of engineering standards, templates, and best practices under the direction of the Engineering Manager.
  • 3+ years of direct experience in an Application Engineering or Controls Programming within the Building Automation Systems (BAS) industry.
  • Proven proficiency in programming control logic using at least one leading BAS platform (e.g., Tridium Niagara, Delta Controls, Honeywell, Siemens, or similar).
  • Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and generate technical construction documents, including mechanical plans, specifications, and control wiring diagrams.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems, control theory, and energy management principles.
  • Proficiency with CAD software (Visio) for developing control drawings and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Professional certification in a major BAS platform (e.g., Tridium N4 Certification).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.
  • Experience with advanced programming or analytics tools.
  • Competitive salary with yearly bonuses, merit raises, and a 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Paid vacation, personal days, holidays, and comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Professional development through industry training, in-office learning, and educational opportunities.
  • Additional benefits including company-paid life insurance, short- and long-term disability, office perks like snacks, cold brew coffee on tap, company swag, & more!
