About The Position

This position will learn from on-the-job training, computer based training and classroom instruction in the processes maintaining the Okaloosa Gas Districts’ natural gas systems. Learns the fundamentals of Meter Maintenance Procedures (Reading, Removals, Cut Offs, Pull meters, and Cut and Caps), Emergency Procedures (Gas leaks, Carbon Monoxide Investigations and Structure fires), and After the Meter Procedures (Turn On, Relight, Meter set, Heat & Gas Inspections). APPRENTICESHIPS (May be offered to eligible candidates without the minimum experience for the Technician I and above): An Apprenticeship is an entry-level training position. Certain training milestones must be met before being qualified for a higher position. This position will learn from on-the-job training, computer-based training and classroom instruction in the processes maintaining the Okaloosa Gas Districts’ natural gas systems. Learns the fundamentals of Meter Maintenance Procedures (Reading, Removals, Cut Offs, Pull meters, and Cut and Caps), Emergency Procedures (Gas leaks, Carbon Monoxide Investigations and Structure fires), and After the Meter Procedures (Turn On, Relight, Meter set, Heat & Gas Inspections). Apprentices have up to 12 months to accomplish training milestones required of this position to include all Operator Qualification requirements. Failure to do so could affect employment. Incumbents in this position will be held to the District’s Gold Standard for Customer Service.

Requirements

  • High School plus one to three years of experience.
  • Oral and written communication skills; capability to listen and understand instructions and/or details to resolve customer trouble calls.
  • Displayed skills to work effectively and cooperatively with a diverse team of coworkers, and internal/external customers within a team environment.
  • Ability to safely operate company supplied vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of and performance of relevant safety procedures associated with natural gas and natural gas appliances.
  • Interpersonal skills to deal with various personality types in less than ideal circumstances.
  • Ability to schedule leave time wisely and efficiently. Uses the leave calendar for scheduled doctor’s appointments and other requested leave including annual and personal leave.
  • This position requires knowledge and task evaluation as determined by Pipeline and Hazardous Material Safety Administration rule CFR 49, Part 192; Subpart N : Operator Qualifications (OQ).
  • Ability to use a computer, smart phone and skills to process computer data.
  • Capacity to develop mechanical, plumbing, electrical and pipefitting skills to complete assigned tasks relative to equipment and systems in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Basic mechanical and piping skills required to maintain natural gas piping systems.
  • Knowledge of District O&M procedures, local building codes, Southern Building Code, FHA and VA requirements.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and maps.
  • Capacity to perform multiple tasks with limited supervision in often confining, cramped spaces.
  • Must possess and maintain valid Florida driver’s license and a driving record satisfactory to the District and its insurers.
  • Must be appropriately dressed in a clean and neat District authorized uniform during work hours.
  • Regular attendance is essential.
  • May be required to work other than normal work schedule.
  • May be required to work overtime or extended hours with little to no notice.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains the District’s natural gas systems from the riser to the private owner’s house piping. This would include regulators, meter bars, meters, piping and fittings.
  • Maintains and repairs meter sets. Completes meter reads, removals, pulls meters and assists with Cut and Caps.
  • Turns gas service on to new and existing customers. Sets Meters on new and existing homes and businesses. Performs Heat & Gas Inspections for our Senior Citizens and other natural gas customers. Conducts pressure checks to ensure structure piping is free of leaks and set to the correct operating service pressure. Conducts routine checks of all gas appliances before leaving premises to ensure all appliances and piping are operational and safe.
  • Aides our first responder to inside natural gas leak and carbon monoxide calls. Isolates and/or repairs gas leaks. Inspects carbon monoxide calls and identifies any defective natural gas appliances in the home or structure. Ensuring our customers safety is our top priority
  • Assists in the Servicing and repair of natural gas tank water heaters, to include estimates for replacement. Maintains natural gas tankless water heaters through de-scaling (de-lime) procedures. Trains on natural gas appliance services when time and work load allows in preparation for Service Technician career advancement and further natural gas knowledge.
  • Completes required automated forms to document materials used and completion of work orders. Documents condition tags, door knockers, parts requests, and other misc. forms used in the course of daily duties.
  • Safely and responsibly operates the District’s automotive vehicles. Maintains vehicles used through appropriate operator maintenance and keeps vehicles clean and neat at all times.
  • Maintains control of inventory items obtained from stock or carried on truck. Maintains tools and equipment in a clean and workable condition.
  • Provides assistance to other Okaloosa Gas District Departments as directed by the Service Supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned.
