About The Position

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides service to patients in designated care settings, including: acute, short and long-term care, by assisting physicians, assessing patients, and treating injuries and ailments. The NP obtains a thorough medical history from patients and, depending on the patient population and setting, will perform an examination and/or assessment to determine the patient's needs. The NP works in collaboration with providers and independently to provide care, formulates a plan for treatment, and prescribes medications as legally authorized. The role also involves maintaining complete and detailed records of patients' health care plans and prognoses, consulting with or referring patients to appropriate specialists, and providing patients with information needed to promote health and prevent disease. Additionally, the NP conducts research into their area of specialty and incorporates evidence-based practice guidelines into care.

Requirements

  • Completion of a master's, postmaster's, or doctorate from a nurse practitioner program accredited by the Commission on the Collegiate of Nursing Education or National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.
  • Licensing prior to August 1, 1995, master's degree in nursing is preferred.
  • Demonstrated current competence and provision of care for an adequate volume of patients in the past twelve months.
  • Current licensure by the applicable state board of nursing for advanced practice.
  • Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) permit to prescribe controlled substances.
  • Certified Family Nurse Practitioner (NP-C) or (FNP-BC).
  • Obtains and maintains required department specific competencies and certifications.

  • Provides health promotion and disease prevention information to patients.
  • Counsels patients and family members about self-management.
  • Covers hospital consultations and assists with patient procedures as needed.
  • Conducts research and uses findings to improve patient care.
  • Incorporates evidence-based practice guidelines into care.
  • Maintains knowledge of state legal regulations for advanced practice providers.
