About The Position

NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is a 306-bed medical center, providing care to residents of eastern Long Island. The hospital facility is home to the Knapp Cardiac Care Center—an advanced heart disease diagnostic and treatment facility—as well as a modern ambulatory surgical pavilion with specialized services including women's imaging, a sleep laboratory, and bariatric surgery. Our Provisional Level 2 Trauma Center delivers comprehensive and specialized care for patients with traumatic injuries. The Stroke Center at NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is designated by the New York State Department of Health as a Primary Stroke Center, with expert neurologists available to provide treatment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Additionally, NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk has multiple outpatient sites, including an outpatient wound care center, a hemodialysis center, and various primary care and specialty offices. We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a APP Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner Manager - Department of Medicine - Full Time - Medical. In this role, the successful candidate will provision, coordinate, and assure comprehensive medical and surgical care using sound medical/surgical knowledge and pertinent standards of care, perform therapeutic, corrective, and prescriptive measures on the designated inpatient or outpatient population, and assume delegatory responsibilities assigned by supervising physician privileged as Medical Staff of NYU Langone Health.

Requirements

  • Current New York State Physician Assistant License.
  • Physician Assistant Bachelor's Degree (BAPA).
  • NCCPA Board Certification required.
  • Basic Life Support Certification through the American Heart Association.
  • At least 5 years of clinical practice in various medical, surgical and/or other specialty areas.
  • Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, effective communication skills, creative problem solving and excellent critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to interface effectively with other disciplines and departments to achieve desired clinical outcomes.
  • Knowledge and experience in coordinating a group of Physician Assistants activities including scheduling, and distribution of patient assignments.
  • Physical stamina, manual dexterity, visual and aural acuity to perform responsibilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced Life Support certification (ACLS, PALS) through the American Heart Association.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation certification (NRP) through the American Academy of Pediatrics.
  • Master's Degree preferred.
  • Membership in professional specialty organizations desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates implementation of clinical research studies or clinical trials, including patient screening, enrollment and data collection.
  • Performs complete health history, physical examination and psychosocial assessment of patients within the designated practice or clinical unit.
  • Documents and communicates relevant patient information comprehensively and in a timely manner.
  • Orders customary laboratory, radiological and diagnostic studies per practice protocols, differentiates between normal/abnormal findings and follows protocols for abnormal findings.
  • Formulates the plan of care, along with the attending physician, patient and family, based on expected goals of care and length of stay.
  • Works collaboratively with the attending physician, consulting physician(s), and other disciplines to identify, develop, and implement an appropriate plan of care.
  • Prescribes in-patient and discharge medications according to New York State law, including controlled substances with DEA authorization.
  • Prescribes medical equipment, devices, physical and occupational therapy, and home health services per practice protocol.
  • Practices as a member of the allied health staff according to the rules and regulations of the Medical Staff and bylaws.
  • Evaluates treatment and health care plans for effectiveness and modifies per clinical standards and practice protocols.
  • Educates patient and family to facilitate and promote healthy adjustment to new or changed health patterns.
  • Acts as a professional role model to all levels of staff by incorporating expertise and related experience into all aspects of patient care.
  • Supports the mission, philosophy, standards, goals and objectives of the institution, department and clinical service.
  • Plans and organizes care to meet individual patient needs and to ensure appropriate clinical resource utilization.
  • Participates in the development and revision of interdisciplinary and hospital standards, patient and family education materials.
  • Provides consultation about the therapeutic regimen to the nursing staff responsible for the patients care in the hospital setting.
  • Facilitates the continuity of care across the continuum of services.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the organizations Core Values and incorporates them into the performance of responsibilities.
  • Participates in designated activities related to professional physician assistant practice standards.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Physician Assistant Services, and the Division Chief for Clinical Service in the recruitment, retention, and human resource management of the Physician Assistants (PAs).
  • Facilitates their orientation and development in the position.
  • Provides leadership and develops effective team building.
  • Participates in performance appraisals for the PAs.
  • Manages monthly schedule and work assignments including timekeeping and payroll entry of the PAs.
  • Promotes own professional growth and development in clinical role.
  • Maintains current expertise in area of practice.
  • Participates in hospital, NY State and JCAHO mandated educational programs.
  • Monitors and trends the cost effectiveness of the position.
