About The Position

The Physician Assistant (PA) provides expert clinical guidance in a specialized field and coordinates patient care quality initiatives. This role will require varying shifts, on-call rotations, including nights, and weekends as needed. The PA provides service to patients in acute, short and long term care settings by assisting physicians, assessing patients, and treating injuries and ailments. They obtain a thorough medical history from patients and, depending on the patient population and setting, will perform an examination and/or assessment to determine the patient's needs. The PA works in collaboration with providers and independently to provide care, formulates a treatment plan, prescribes medications, maintains detailed records, and consults with or refers patients to specialists when necessary. They also conduct research into their area of specialty and incorporate evidence-based practice guidelines into care.

Requirements

  • Master's or Baccalaureate degree (Associate's or Nursing Degree if training prior to 1994).
  • Successful completion of a physician assistant program accredited by the ARC-PA.
  • Demonstrated current competence and provision of care for at least 30 patients in the past twelve months.
  • Successful completion of the national certifying examination.
  • Current certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) permit to prescribe controlled substances.

Responsibilities

  • Assist physicians in assessing patients and treating injuries and ailments.
  • Obtain thorough medical histories from patients.
  • Perform examinations and assessments to determine patient needs.
  • Analyze and interpret information collected from patients and medical records.
  • Develop and establish appropriate diagnoses.
  • Coordinate care and navigation by rounding on patients.
  • Formulate treatment plans and prescribe medications as legally authorized.
  • Maintain complete and detailed records of patients' health care plans.
  • Consult with or refer patients to appropriate specialists.
  • Provide patients with information to promote health and prevent disease.
  • Counsel patients and family members about self-management.
  • Cover hospital consultations and assist with patient procedures as needed.
  • Conduct research and use findings to improve patient care.
  • Incorporate evidence-based practice guidelines into care.
  • Maintain current knowledge of state legal regulations for advanced practice provider practices.
