About The Position

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides service to patients in designated care settings, including acute, short and long-term care, by assisting physicians, assessing patients, and treating injuries and ailments. The NP obtains a thorough medical history from patients and, depending on the patient population and setting, will perform an examination and/or assessment to determine the patient's needs. The NP works in collaboration with providers and independently to provide care, formulates a treatment plan, and prescribes medications as legally authorized. The role also involves maintaining detailed records of patients' health care plans, consulting with specialists when necessary, and providing patients with information to promote health and prevent disease.

Requirements

  • Completion of a master's, postmaster's, or doctorate from a nurse practitioner program accredited by the Commission on the Collegiate of Nursing Education or National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.
  • Licensing prior to August 1, 1995, master's degree in nursing is preferred.
  • Demonstrated current competence and provision of care for an adequate volume of patients in the past twelve months.
  • Current licensure by the applicable state board of nursing for advanced practice.
  • Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) permit to prescribe controlled substances.
  • Certified Family Nurse Practitioner (NP-C) or (FNP-BC).
  • Obtains and maintains required department specific competencies and certifications.

  • Formulates treatment plans and prescribes medications.
  • Maintains complete and detailed records of patients' health care plans.
  • Consults with or refers patients to appropriate specialists.
  • Provides patients with information to promote health and reduce risk factors.
  • Counsels patients and family members about self-management.
  • Covers hospital consultations, rounding, and assists with patient procedures as needed.
  • Conducts research into specialty area to improve patient care.
  • Incorporates evidence-based practice guidelines into care.
  • Maintains current knowledge of state legal regulations for advanced practice provider practices.
