About The Position

The Stanford neurocritical care program provides unparalleled care for patients with critical neurologic illness. The neurocritical care program is dedicated to providing excellent clinical care for the sickest, most vulnerable patients and performing cutting-edge research to bring discovery to the bedside and improve patient outcomes. The APP team started in 2016 and is made up of 21 total APPs which are essential to the neurocritical care program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited university
  • Graduate of a PA program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc.
  • PA - Physician Assistant State Licensure
  • BLS - Basic Life Support
  • DEA - Drug Enforcement Administration

  • Neuro and/or ICU experience

Responsibilities

  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds with attendings, fellows, residents, and APPs
  • Manage 4-6 patients of their own as well as consults in a variety of critical care settings
  • Perform procedures including central lines, arterial lines, and lumbar punctures
  • Have access to many learning opportunities and resources
  • Evaluate and treat patients with acute, chronic complaints and health maintenance concerns related to specialty
  • Obtain complete histories and perform pertinent physical exams with assessment of normal and abnormal findings on new and return patients
  • Perform or request and evaluate diagnostic studies as indicated upon evaluation of the patient
  • Order or furnish medications under physician supervision
  • Order and collect specimens for routine laboratory tests, screening procedures and therapeutic procedures
  • Order physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, radiology examinations and nursing services
  • Perform designated procedures after demonstrated competency
  • Obtain informed consent, as indicated
  • Initiate arrangements for hospital admissions and discharges and complete appropriate paperwork
  • Enroll patients in investigational studies approved by the Investigational Review Board (IRB)
  • Assist the supervising physician in the operating room (OR)
  • Recognize and consider age-specific needs of patients
  • Effectively communicate and interact with patients, families, staff and members of the community from diverse backgrounds
  • Recognize situations which require the immediate attention of a physician, and initiate life-saving procedures when necessary
  • Facilitate the coordination of inpatient and outpatient care and services as needed
  • Facilitate collaboration between providers and coordination of community resources
  • Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory and clinical policies and procedures
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives
  • Provide and coordinate patient teaching and counseling
