About The Position

This Advanced Practice Provider (APP) position is within the division of Blood and Marrow Transplant and will rotate between our inpatient and Infusion Treatment Area (ITA) services. In conjunction with the Attending Physician, APPs provide collaborative care including history, physical assessment, and laboratory / diagnostic test review to establish diagnoses and develop appropriate treatment plans for acute and chronic health problems for bone marrow transplant and hematologic malignancy patients. BMT APPs admit, follow, and discharge patients from both the inpatient and intensive ambulatory clinic. Procedures include bone marrow biopsy, punch skin biopsy, CVC tunneled line removal, and lumbar puncture. This is a part time position (0.75 FTE) and will work 5 12-hour shifts every 2 weeks for a total of 60 hours every 2 weeks. The Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) functions under a Job Description approved by the Interdisciplinary Practice Committee (IDPC).

Requirements

  • Master degree as NP or Graduate of a PA program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc.
  • PA - Physician Assistant State Licensure
  • NP - CA RN, NP, and Furnishing License
  • BLS - Basic Life Support
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support
  • DEA - Drug Enforcement Administration

Responsibilities

  • Provide collaborative care including history, physical assessment, and laboratory / diagnostic test review to establish diagnoses and develop appropriate treatment plans for acute and chronic health problems for bone marrow transplant and hematologic malignancy patients.
  • Admit, follow, and discharge patients from both the inpatient and intensive ambulatory clinic.
  • Perform procedures including bone marrow biopsy, punch skin biopsy, CVC tunneled line removal, and lumbar puncture.
  • Abide by all Joint Commission requirements including, but not limited to, sensitivity to cultural diversity, patient care, patients’ rights and ethical treatment, safety and security of physical environments, emergency management, teamwork, respect for others, participation in ongoing education and training, communication and adherence to safety and quality programs, sustaining compliance with National Patient Safety Goals, and licensure and health screenings.
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the C-I-CARE Standards of the Hospital.
  • Execute world class practices of service and patient care in support of C-I-CARE standards.
  • Use C-I-CARE templates and the following components for all communication with patients and staff: CONNECT with people by calling them their proper name, or the name they prefer (Mr., Ms., Dr.); INTRODUCE yourself and your role; COMMUNICATE what you are going to do, how long it will take, and how it will impact the patient; ASK permission before entering a room, examining a patient or undertaking an activity; RESPOND to patient’s questions or requests promptly; anticipate patient needs; EXIT courteously with an explanation of what will come next.
  • Provide only those medical services which he/she is competent to perform, which are consistent with the PA’s education, training and experience, and which are delegated by a supervising physician who is responsible for the patients cared for by that PA.
  • Consult with a physician regarding any task, procedure or diagnostic problem which the PA determines exceeds his/her level of competence or shall refer such cases to a supervising physician.
  • Evaluate and treat patients with acute, chronic complaints and health maintenance concerns related to specialty.
  • Obtain complete histories and perform pertinent physical exams with assessment of normal and abnormal findings on new and return patients.
  • Perform or request and evaluate diagnostic studies as indicated upon evaluation of the patient.
  • Administer medications according to the formulary protocol or upon patient-specific approval from the supervising physician, or transmit orally or in writing on a patient’s record, a prescription from the supervising physician to a person who may furnish such medication.
  • Order and collect specimens for routine laboratory tests, screening procedures and therapeutic procedures, including blood and blood products.
  • Order physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, radiology examinations and nursing services.
  • Perform designated procedures after demonstrated competency, according to written standardized procedures where applicable.
  • Obtain informed consent, as indicated.
  • Initiate arrangements for hospital admissions and discharges and complete appropriate paperwork.
  • As directed by the supervising physician, enroll patients in investigational studies approved by the Investigational Review Board (IRB), and order the necessary tests and medications.
  • After appropriate training, assist the supervising physician in the operating room (OR).
  • Act as first or second assistant under the supervision of an approved supervising physician.
  • Perform surgical procedures in the personal presence of the supervising physician.
  • Recognize and consider age-specific needs of patients.
  • Effectively communicate and interact with patients, families, staff and members of the community from diverse backgrounds.
  • Recognize situations which require the immediate attention of a physician, and initiate life-saving procedures when necessary.
  • Facilitate the coordination of inpatient and outpatient care and services as needed.
  • Facilitate collaboration between providers and coordination of community resources.
  • Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory and clinical policies and procedures.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Provide and coordinate patient teaching and counseling.
  • Adopt and execute C-I-CARE standards for all of patients, families and towards each other.
